60K Service - Pricey!

So I went to my local dealership to buy an engine oil filter (finally going to start changing my own oil on the FX) and while I was there, decided to get a quote for the 60K mile service. The dealership charges about $50 for an oil change using dino oil, so I was expecting the price to be pretty hefty. I'm at 53k on a 6.5 year old vehicle so I'm planning on doing this stuff pretty soon.

The service includes:
- replace engine oil and filter
- replace air filter
- replace brake fluid
- replace auto transmission fluid
- replace engine coolant
- replace transfer case oil
- replace differential oil
- replace wipers
- replace drive belts
- replace in-cabin microfilter
- rotate tires and check pressures
- inspect/test horn, lights, wipers
- perform 27 pt inspection (doesn't outline what the 27 points are)
- inspect fuel and vapor lines
- inspect brake pads and discs
- inspect exhaust system
- inspect suspension complete
- inspect steering gear
- clean sunroof drains
- adjust parking brake

All for $1,081.83. Ouch.

I'm thinking I'm going to do all this stuff myself. It will be the first time I've done most of on any car, other than engine oil/brake pads. I'm a little concerned about the belts, but everything else seems doable.

I looked through the list and could at least say that the cabin filter, wipers, and air filters you could definately do yourself and save about $200-$300 on that.

Dealer charges like $80 to change air filters when it takes like 5 minutes to do. Same goes for wipers....

from the top of the list up to inspecting horn and the last to work i.e. cleaning sunroof and adjusting parking brake are all DIY's. save yourself all the $$$ and do all the work. might take 2 days at most. well worth the savings.

Lets not even get me started here :mask:
several hundred off what it should cost if you have a friendly mechanic.
Infinity service is not your friend . . unless her name is Cheryl

Yikes! I'd most definitely say do those things yourself and have the dealership do any inspections you're not sure of. If it seems labor intensive just think about this. I just did the 60K service on my '04 G35x. Look at what I spent on fluids, etc.
-Five qt jug of synthetic oil at Walmart - $26; Oil filter - $13
-I use a K&N but will switching to a Napa Gold air filter - probably $10 (2 for FX35)
-Haven't flushed brake fluid yet - scared of dropping it on the paint (rolls eyes)
-12 qts of Nissan Matic S for tranny @ 8.99 each - $108. (BTW, dealership always throws in washers for free for some reason when I ask.)
-1 gal of full strength antifreeze - $16 (Don't buy premixed, save money and mix it yourself with distilled water.)
-2 qts of Matic J for transfer case @ 6.99 each - $14; Siphon pump - $4
-3 qts of synthetic 75w-90 gear lube for both diff's@ 9.29 each - $30; Pump - $10
-I only do wipers when they become useless & they're fine right now.
-Can't find my receipt for the 2 belts but they were kinda pricey. I had to change them at 45K but IIRC, they came to about $60-$70. Be sure to save your old belts for long road trips in case a belt breaks.
-Bought my in cabin filters in bulk so I don't know how much they run I would guess between $18-$26.
-Rotate tires and check pressure - Free
-Everything else is up to you to determine if you trust your knowledge to inspect everything else.
-Don't know about the sunroof drains, haven't looked but I'd say just some can compressed air for computers (just a guess)

Of course prices will vary but there's no doubt you will save a LOT of money by doing these yourself. Plus the satisfaction of knowing it was done right. PLUS, you boost your confidence to work on your own vehicle each time you do it.

Oh btw, one thing I suggest that I didn't see on your list was power steering fluid. Just suction it out with a turkey baster or siphon and replace power steering fluid - $9

Not bad pretty inexpensive:smug: 6.5 years is 2372 days, comes out to .46cents a day, I spend more then that on coffee each day.

These services are pretty important:
- replace brake fluid
- replace auto transmission fluid
- replace engine coolant
- replace transfer case oil
- replace differential oil
- replace drive belts

As a tech who left the auto industry, each one of those services is probably 200 bucks, the price comes from parts and service/labor, what most people don't realize is the labor is experienced and skill to do the job right the 1st time, the tools, and a lift, ease of doing it and disposal of fluids, 50% of motor oil sold in the US is recycled, besides the obvious burning and leaking, what happened to the other 50%.

Most DIY don't understand a small mistake can cost way more then the original job, of all the fluids you could not pay me to change diff fluid, and it use to be my job, the stuff stinks and sticks to you and is a combination of mayo and lard in texture and is black and stains everything.

Check around and watch your email for offers and discounts, 20% off mondays, with an additional 10% off all parts purchased, should bring the price to 500-700, depending how you pick and choose, not to mention who has the time to do this.

Take this list to your local mechanic. Bet you can get over 50% off minimum. This stuff isn't rocket science and you should feel comfortable your local mechanic can do it (as long as you do your due diligence first).
