2IS :: 2009 Lexus IS250

Just started a new DIY that is easily one of the top 5 PITA DIYs on my list. The goal is to solder in 100+ new 5k LEDs and replace all the stock ugly green interior lights on the radio, AC vents, push start button, gas/trunk/etc switches. Started off with the AC vents and push start button last night. Going to tackle the buttons and radio last once the rest of the LEDs come in. Tweezers and a magnifying class are a must! Disassembling the interior and individual pieces to access the LEDs is probably 80% of the work whereas the soldering and cutting is the remaining 20%. No finished pics yet but here's a bunch of random AC vents that went under the knife!

Thanks guys. The worst part is I live on the 3rd floor of a walk up condo, and the garage is on the ground floor. Last night walked up and down at least 20 times to test parts so I'm more exhausted from that than actually the DIY itself. Time to move everything to the garage...

Soldering can be frustrating. I remember trying it once and I just couldn't see well enough. I guess my up close vision is getting bad already. There was a magnifying glass thing, but I couldn't get it to stay up and I needed both hands.

You need a 3rd floor --> garage runner haha!

The LED interior swap is finally done! Total time was probably 10-12 hours including disassembling, soldering, and testing, then soldering more. Great learning experience, but will I ever do it again? Probably not but it was fun while it lasted. Anyways, some before/after pictures :smile (2):

I underestimated how small the LEDs were, my hands definitely got sweaty at first!

LEDs compared to a dime:

Tons of soldering, testing, soldering, repeat:

Final Product Before/After (LED Install, Headunit/Navi Mod, CF Wrap, etc...):

After this, not much left to do to the interior except a few more items to get through winter (IS-F Cluster & Front "Curb" Camera). Enjoy! :wink:

Wow very impressive :good:, my big paws couldn't do that fine soldering work.

Wow, looks great! The leds pop! That's a lot of time and work right there.. Well done!

Wow I consider myself pretty good at soldering and would have never attempted something like that. Nice work...
