Recently bought an 04' FX45 and like it so far except for one aspect. Cruising on the highway at 75, the rpm's are 2700-2800. Why so high? I realize it's a bit limited due to being a 5 spd auto - but that seems ridiculous.

Appreciate any input.

Uhh, I don't mean to point out the obvious but the reason is "gear ratios"...

I figured that - just surprised I suppose. I get the same mpg's driving around town as I do doing 75mph - not many vehicles I'm aware of sacrifice hwy mileage in the name of gear ratio. Just found it annoying as it seems like it needs another gear - badly.

Yep, that sounds about right. While there's a good amount of power up there, the top end efficiency mark is closer to 70. If your goal is mpg, keep it around 65.
Your stats aren't too bad though. I try for under 3k with swift cruising.

Appreciate the response as I wasn't sure this was "normal" or not. Not overly concerned about mileage as I have the 45, a Vette and an Armada. Just seemed like it was working harder than it should need to to cruise at 75. I just looked, and noticed the 50's have a 7 spd automatic, probably a good move overall.

I think the 03-08 FX35's are even higher! Anyone care to share what their RPMs are at 75mph?

I agree, it'd be nice to have an extra gear or even 4 cylinder deactivation -- especially with a V8 the RPM's don't need to be as high.

Ok, I'll go over the speed limit for a little bit to get the numbers on here this afternoon on the way home:wink (2):

I just clocked 75 @ 2600. Insignificant wind and slope. Temp in the high 60's and elevation around 1000 ft. I'm gusessing that mile high elevation affects things a little bit.

I clocked 75 @ 2400-2450rpm. This was from slow acceleration.
When I quickly accelerated to a steady 75, the rpm was at 2700rpm.

This was at night, mid 70s. I drove 20 minutes before trying.

Good deal, thanks for all the replies. The car runs well, it's an 04' with 59k on the clock - I just wasn't aware of the gear ratio. I'm glad to hear this is normal as I wasn't sure. Seems like it'd be the perfect set-up with a 6 spd in it - but we still like it a lot. I looked and noticed the 50's went to a 7 spd auto, I imagine that's a nice set up whether in town or on the highway.

Cheers.

Yeah, but it's not actually just the 50's.. It's all of the 09 and up models, including the 09 FX35. The 7spd feels great though, especially after having a loaner g37 for 4 days.

Yep, it would be nice to have an over-overdrive gear for cruising. I pulled a trailer for 2,000 miles a few weeks ago at 80mph, just under 3,000RPM and 11.1 MPG average. Not so great. It is nice, though, to not have to downshift for normal acceleration on the highway.

Nissan tends to undergear their cars for performance - which is why I buy them.
