2014 QX won’t shift outta 1st

Well my 2014 QX70 with just under 80k has decided not shift out of first gear as of last night. The P0720 popped up. I feel comfy around cars. Have never sunk my teeth into anything like this. A friend has a shop and has offered his space. I do the labor. Looking for tips and want to hear all the horror stories Thank you.
 
Have you tried changing your transmission oil? The resulting code could be from a dirty sensor that's preventing you from changing gears.
 
I haven’t. I’m tackling the car next week and I was thinking about starting with that. So thanks for the tip. I’ve gone ahead and ordered the valve body just to have it. But it won’t hurt to check with that first. Thanks for the feedback back.
