2011 FX50S (Noise coming from mirror assy at high speeds)

Ok heres my dilemma. I just purchased this vehicle about a month ago. since then i have took in 3 times for things that i found and could not live with. they had to replace the fuel pump bcuz my gas gauge just suddenly started reporting empty from half a tank. They said this was in a Technical Service Bulletin. ok

They also replaced the dome light because it would keep flickering.

Heres the dilemma. I noticed this problem when I get on it and get up around a 100mph. Theres a loud whirring sound that comes from the drivers side mirror assy. I cant drive my vehicle like this. I was frustrated for yet another trip within the space of time. Not only that I knew I would be facing some resistance and boy did I. Let me first off expalin Im not a nit picker. I would much rather be enjoying my vehicle and taking care of other personal business than spend it taking it in to my local infiniti dealer. So i pulled in to the service center and this young guy asked if im the problem was back again? the problem he was referring to was the gas gauge problem. I said no. I explained to him my new problem and that it only happens at around 100mph. He gave me a odd look and immediately went into "Well sir we cannot drive at those speeds that would be breaking the law". and we wont be able to mimic your problem because it only happens at those speeds. so we went round and round until i just left him there and went and spoke to the service mgr and another service appt guy. I explained that I was not asking them to break the law. I told them the problem the manager said he would take it for a drive and see if it happens at legal speeds i said it didnt but he can take it anyway. They looked the vehicle over for anything loose. When I first took it in I did not know it was the mirror. They returned my vehicle to me they said they noticed the mirrors were a lil loose. They said they heard no noise. I just left and immediately took it on the hwy and sure enuff the noise was still there. i decided to fold in the mirrors and took it up to 100 mph again and there was no more noise. folded the mirros back out and the sound came back, bingo. I called the service guy and let him know and he basically was telling me that he guess those mirrors werent designed for high speeds. I said I just found the problem there is something obviuosly going on with the mirror assy. he said he will talk to his mgr about it and call me back. Have not heard back.

Here are my questions
Can they get away with this "we cannot mimic the problem because we cannot break the law" so Im stuck with the problem because they cant break the law? Thats almost like buying a ferrari and saying well sir were sorry it doesnt go past 65mph but we cant test that because thats breaking the law.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or have an idea of what this could be?

What recourse do I have? what do i need to do when I go back up there?

Thanks

Hmmmm gl !!!! Anyhow i have no solition but its too new and too nice of a ride to be making any noise

mine doesn't make any noise at those speeds. I'm sure the mirrors are loose and the wobbling is probably making that noise.

Thx Fireonice. I didnt think of that.

Anyways Thx for the other inputs. Im still seeing how I can get this issue fixed. So looking for more helpful advice to help fix.

Thax

Offer to take them for a ride at speed. Still illegal, but it would be your liability. Other than that, you're sol.

I've had the whirring problem after I took in my FX into the dealer for an annoying tilt-down mirror that kept getting stuck trying to go down. After they fixed it I got the whirring noise at higher speeds (doesn't have to be 100, it started around 40). Check the mirror cover (or cap or whatever that painted body color portion is) to make sure it is flush all the way around and nothing is sticking out, if its not flush then that is your problem. Just look for any small cracks or openings that allow air to pass by

Thx a lot lerry and pmg705. This is the helpful input I was looking for not why am i driving at 100mph.

I have offered to take them for a ride to hear it but they didnt want to that either. I will look for any protrusions on the mirror. I suspected something like that before and noticed the housing may not be as flush as it should be. i will take another closer look. Hopefully they can replace it and that solves the problem.

Thx again guys. Will keep you posted.

The Dealership had a change of heart and after I told them what i found replaced the mirror assembly. Problem solved. Now i ride in confort (yes at a 100mph and sometimes above) no annoying sound. It must have been something in the housing that might have been loose and would vibrate at higher speeds is my best guess.

Anyways thanks for the helpful inputs.

It's just lose plastic/mirror Mine did the same until I had it tightened. MIne happened at 65 mph-110mph

Thanks for posting this pfrederi, I have a 2011 FX35 that does the same, usually doesn't start until almost 80mph, but if windy out, can start around 65 - 70 mph. I will take it to Infiniti to have the mirrors checked out!

there's a few screws you need to tighten that will fix it. Somebody posted how to do it do a search on here
