2004 FX35 with 212,000 miles

Sad to say we are thinking about getting rid of our 2004 FX35. We owned it since new and was garage kept. It still looks great and drives well but of course has some interior/exterior issues. Currently has a new set of tires. No transmission issues but it might need catalytic converters. She starts right up and has excellent power. Only thing that doesn't work (I believe) is the back up camera. The camera itself is bad.

I plan on getting her a new SUV. I would keep it and drive it myself but already have two vehicles not to mention its not a pickup truck. We have a couple of properties to maintain and whenever I think about getting rid of the pickup...something happens... where I need it.

So here it is...My question is to you guys and gals. What is the highest mileage FX you have seen on road? What was the asking price? When I tell people ours have 212,000 they don't believe it.

In the end we may put on new OEM Cats and keep it moving.

This makes me proud to see high mileage FX, I have an 04 RWD with 130k miles. I know 2 years ago trade-in value for my FX was $9500 with 108k miles. Have you had anything major chanhged? anything i should know in advance...lol
 
I forgot to mention. She had a accident in it about 5 years ago. Basically what happened was she came around a bend to get on the highway and rear ended a SUV. She was okay but took out the radiator and grill. There is a soft spot on the FX front end, right in the middle of grill top to bottom. I may still have the photo somewhere. Reason I mention this is that she got a new radiator and hoses at 100k miles as well as the front end painted.

I put 300,000 miles and then 500,000 miles in the Kelly Blue Book and the value didn't change. So with a private sale its valued at $8,148.00 independent of mileage.

Wheel hubs (bearings) are a big item. I replaced all four. I replaced the front and rear struts on all four corners. On the second set of rear struts. Fronts probably didn't need to be changed. Those are maintenance items. Dealer replaced dashboard. I would say the big expense is the Catylitic Converters. On third set of tires. I would suggest getting the transmission fluid changed at Infiniti only. ONLY USE INFINITY/NISSAN TRANSMISSION FLUID, ESPECIALLY WITH HIGH MILES.

I'm really impressed how this FX drives with 212,000 miles.

To get a decent gauge, try hitting up carmax. They offer free quotes takes 30min. Certain areas demand more $$ for certain cars.

Also try to use Edmund.com and Nada.com

i recommend carmax for this too. at least you have an amount you can get and try to get higher by private sale. if the accident is on carfax/autocheck expect a big hit on the value. i checked some listing in nj and found similar fx with slightly less miles starting at $9k. since you know the value right now is $8k personally i would list the fx at $10k since buyers will bargain, then lower it to $9k a week or two later if needed. also, organize all the receipts and paperwork and put them together in one folder including pics of any body work. i will also make a list of things they need to know upfront (i.e. body work, recalls done, needed fixes) so no surprises. i planned to present all of them to potential buyers but it only took one. i did these when i sold mine and the buyer himself said he can tell i took care of it from the maintenance side. good luck.
 
It's tempting to put after market cats. Is there a particular brand anyone have good luck with? Only thing about aftermarket cats is that they are cheaper for a reason. That's because they have less precious metals in them. I love the FX exhause as is but would imagine it would sound louder with the after market cats.

Brought the FX in for a oil change. My mechanic has a couple of after market options for cats. He will let me know Monday.
 
They look good. Not sure if they are worth the aggravation with slight differences in fit. It all depends if you are doing them yourself or paying someone. I for one don't have access to a welder. It's on my want list but I'm not a professional mechanic.

Just called the dealer a few minutes ago. Catalytic converters for both sides are $722.09 each (yikes. Need the pre-muffler pipe also also which is at $431.00.

I'm planning on putting the catalytic converters on myself. My biggest concern is breaking a stud on the manifold. I did this on my pickup truck but here is the catch...On my truck, the exhaust manifold has three studs in it. Meaning I had a high probability of breaking one out of six (and I did and it was a nightmare). It was easily resolved using a device called a clamp a stud. It's a c clamp and it pinches the manifold and catalytic convertor flange.

On the Infiniti, two of the studs are on Catalytic Converter and one is on the exhaust manifold (left or right). I like this because I can care less if I break one on the old cats. Unlikely that I will break one on the manifold. The probability is low.

Make a long story short. We are going to keep her on the short term. She still looks good. With the new cats...she will drive GREAT!! I put OEM cats on my truck and its a beast and sounds good. I expect the same from the FX35.

No need for welding on the HFC's, should be direct bolt on. FX and G are the same part for cat. What is the pre-muffler pipe? The Y-pipe or the mid-pipe?
 
So, you're going OEM? My '04 is overdue for both cats; dealer quoted $2k+. I got 162k on the ODO and have been going back and forth on whether to put that kind of money in to her. Let us know which way you bounce and what the final till comes to.
 
Yup. I grimaced with each purchase. But guys and gals, the best price for OEM cats were $559.00 each. I bought them off of a Infiniti dealer on Ebay. Ebay store (pepeinfiniti). My front pipe heat shields were shot also. The mid pipe with the resonator was bad also. I have a Walker muffler on the rear.

So installing it yourself. Cost of both OEM cats is $1118.00. You should change all your 02 sensors. That is going to run $300.00. So the cheapest you can do it installing yourself is $1418.00. You could pay someone to install them for $300.00 if you look hard enough.

The second best price you can get on OEM parts is a Infiniti Online parts Dealer website. But beware. Not all dealers charge the same price. If you look up the price of catalytic convertor on the infiniti edison (Ray Catena), the price is about $1400.00 with core price. I stopped by Ray Catena Infiniti dealer parts counter a couple of weeks back and the over the counter price was $862.00 + $140 core for a total of $1000.00.

However I did find a Ramsey Infiniti dealer that was selling parts online also and price was close to the ebay price. The only issue there was taxes and shipping. I had planned to pick my part up but in the end I decided to get 2nd cat, front and rear pipe from PepiInfiniti. I received and bought one cat from pepi already. It came next day from NY, which was about a 1.5 hour driving distance to my house.

Bought front and rear 02 sensors from NGK. Rear part# 24408 and 24404. Front both sides are part 24320. Found the best price on the 02 servers between Amazon, ebay and rockauto. Averaged about $68 each. I believe NGK is the OEM manufacturer for NISSAN.

I wouldn't risk putting HFC's on my wife car. Mainly due to the possible noise factor. I have a Borla cat back exhaust on my Corvette and that's a little noisy for her. If I was building a high performance FX35/G35 and wanted high flow cats, for myself I might purchase them. The only other issue I see there is no heat shield on the cats (which made me look at my Corvette original exhaust pipe and there is a heat shield on one side of the front Y pipe and the Borla doesn't have it of course).

Bosal makes a front Y pipe and resonator pipe. However there is no heat shielding on the front y pipe.

One of my coworkers put after market cats on his 2002 Maxima. He said he was sorry he did it because it made it sound like a sports car. He mentioned he should have spent the extra money and gone OEM not to deal with the noise.

However, he's as much a car guy as my wife. BTW, he recently bought a Infiniti G35 Sedan.
