I believe it is the different fuel grade available in different region. They have to choose an overall safe timing suitable for all different fuel grade, so they will not end up replacing the new engine every year for warranty.

I believe ECU tuning is not necessary. With the +2 timing, your overall MPG will go lower a bit. That's the sacrifices for additional few horses.![]()
It's not a +2 option. You can advance/retard the timing much more than just 2. It just happens to be the option that best benefits the average vehicle.I spoke to a Infiniti dealer mechanic I know. I mentioned this and while he chuckled at the hope of a few HP, he said he would do it when I come in next week. I'll let you know.
PS: I still don't understand the reason behind this. I know what more timing does, but I don't get why Infiniti has a +2 degrees option? I like it, but why would they allow it?

I have the opposite experience. my MPG went from ~17-18 to 19-20 and I can feel more on the butt dyno... maybe you need to do a tuneup? (air filter, oil change etc?)
