$100 to change spark plugs

Seems like a normal rate for 1-1.5 hours job. Cylinder 3 and 6 will take some time.

Wait, he did try to sell you just the spark plugs for $120?

My mechanic tried charging me 120 just for the NGK iridium spark plugs when I went for my inspection a few days ago that passed....I said, you know I am going for my PhD now, how stupid do you think I am? lol...Heading to AAP now to get the plugs and do it myself

Going for ur PhD doesn't mean ur mechanically incline to do work on a car.

$120 for plugs and labor is a good price. I don't think anyone can charge $20 a plug so I'm going to guess its with labor. This isn't a 4 cylinder where everything is on top. But this isn't the hardest car either.

Hands will be dirty. But good job on wanting to DIY. Its a job everyone should be able to do.

My daughter and her husband both have their PHD's, and they couldn't change their own plugs, but most people couldn't do what they do.

what does getting your phd have anything to do with being mechanically inclined? You're not better than everyone else. He was giving you his expertise and recommendations with a quote. Stop thinking you're better than everyone else because you have a "PHD".

Some people mark up prices for a reason. to get rid of donkeys. just saying cause I do the same to ignorant people.

Lots of companies do it. when you have customers who are pricks, a lot of times companies mark prices up so you don't have to deal with them or you screw them with prices. what comes around goes around.

Found some security cam footage from Viperi's shop...

Ah, gotcha. However, there's a distinct difference between a person who's a prick vs ignorant. I can see how the former "deserves" what's coming to them, but I fail to see the logic/ethics in taking advantage of someone that simply lacks knowledge. Proper treatment and education to a layman can gain a business a customer for life and a free referral service imo.

I know plenty of people that do this - auto shops, lawyers, orthodontists, doctors. Basically anytime there is a quote involved, difficult people will get an astronomical quote just so they leave.

Yeh, I agree with you , I read it over again and I think that is what he meant, that the plugs alone were $120. Which is a crazy price.

Thanks for understanding my statement. I was not trying to say that because I am educated I am better than ANYONE. What I was trying to say was that the shop I went to for my inspection quoted me a price of 120.00 for the plugs alone, which I thought was very unfair.

I never stated nor do I think I am better than anyone because I am educated:) Get a grip on yourself:) I am not a prick, nor am I ignorant. I am quite capable of replacing spark plugs and I thought the markup on the plugs was unfair being that the retail cost is 9 dollars or so.
