The door handle on our drivers side front door broke last night and from
research this is a common problem. I did a search on how to repair it and found
a great write up for one with non intelligent key door handles. Anyone know what
the difference is with the intelligent key? I am guessing the interior door
panel has to come off. Also I downloaded the Exterior/interior service manual
and nothing in there on the door handles which was odd. Any advice?
Thanks

Intelligent key handle will have a hole in it for the iKey button. That's the only difference.

As for taking the handle off, you don't need to take the door panel off. There is only one screw which holds the handle on and that is located under a cover on the edge of door where it latches (Little round black thing, just pull it off, and you will see a T30 screw if you look deep in there).

That's what I thought but every pic I see of the handle on parts website shows a wire pigtail with a plug on the end. Not sure how I could unplug the existing one and plug in the new one through the hole the handle hooks into. Just don't want to tear into it until I know exactly what to do.

There is a screw on the back of the door handle, this allows the back side of the door handle to separate, and the wire and plug to come out.

Then just use the existing plug that feeds into the door? Thanks for the answers btw.

Yep exactly.

Once you take off the door handle or once you see the back side of the spare you get it will make perfect sense.

Cool. Thanks for the help! It would be nice if they sold ones without the plug. Might make em less spendy!
Oh one thing I thought of when reading through the removal write up. Will that torx screw fall out if you back it out too far? I read on another site there is a plastic clip that prevents it from coming out too far. Just curious.

Just be careful when unscrewing it, it should be held in place with a clip, but some people have lost their screws into the bottom of the their door, and it becomes a big pain in the ass to get the screw back.

Just came up with a new issue. I was able to download the Service manual and it says when you unscrew the Torx screw you have to remove the rod from the Key Lock. Our FX45 has a key lock on the drivers side. Can I access the rod without removing the door panel or will it just slide in and out of the key lock piece when I remove it? The service manual was not real clear on this. All the write ups talk about the eustacian and not the kind of handles that have the key lock. Any suggestions?

You don't have to take the lock out completely to get the door handle off. You can get it out far enough with the lock attached to the rod still in order to get the door handle off.

OK, good to know. I don't think getting the old one out is the issue. Its so broken I can get it off without doing anything. Its just getting the new one in. I will just take my time and should be good.
