Hi,

I was looking at purchasing a 05 FX35 with 173,000 kms on it, I'm in Canada so not sure what that is in miles maybe like 100,000 miles or so. Anyway it has the tech package, with Nav and is in pretty good condition, new tires etc. What would be the high end and low end for buying one of these. He is asking $15,000. I've seen them lower but they also had less KM's. and also from what I hear they are a awesome SUV ( crossover ) I was looking at a 04 4Runner as well and not sure which one to get

Thanks

$15k is ok but definetly not a deal in my opinion. But again I'm in PNW of us so the prices might vary

Well deff go with the FX, no question there. Two completely different vehicles, of course the 4 Runner is probably more off road capable, but if that isn't a big deal to you then the FX tickles a lot more senses. Its fun to drive, much more luxurious than a 4 Runner, and have a great history of reliability. Go with an AWD model if your dealing with snow or dirt on a daily basis. As far as price goes it really comes down to vehicle condition and options. AWD/RWD, Sport Package, Tech package are things to consider. An 05' with that kind of mileage can be had for less than $15k unless its in excellent condition and well optioned, but I know the demand and availability of a car like this might be suspect in Canada so that can also put a premium on the price.

I'd say somewhere between $12k and $15k. Sport Package would push it high end. Check out the leather, especially the drivers seat. Check out the dashboard to see it shows any signs of bubbling.

I would do a little more research before you pull the trigger. It might be the right price but make sure you see what packages it has in addition to tech and like stated above the wear and tear it has.

Remember that this is a forum and most people here know what to look for and because of that we (forum members) look for deals but it is not reflective of the actual market. It is hard for us to tell you what you should be paying for any car. A car can be worth more money in one place compared to another.

Things i learned while looking for an FX

1) They do not last long when people are trying to sell them
2) Full optioned AWD with Tech package and all the bells and whistles is HARD to find
3) people don't give them away(seller might lower by $500)
4) Broaden your search area...Be ready to travel

Is 173,000 a lot of kms for a 05? how long do these engines/tranny last. When I say that I just mean what does everyone have on there FX35 for mileage?

Mine is at about 170,000 kms and still runs like a dream. I bought her at around 168,000.The VQ engines will last a very long time if you put in the time and effort to maintain them. I would not even hesitate at that mileage.

107k mi (173000km) is nothing for this engine/tranny. There are people on here with well over 200k and no issues

Mine has 160k now and still provides that beautiful VQ exhaust tone and smooth powerband throughout. I have owned 3 first gen FX35s and all were great. If clean history and maintained properly, go for it!

Oh everyone I have taken it for a test drive and had a couple of questions, this 35 did have the 20 inch wheels but the steering seems to be alot more stiffer ( compared to my new maxima anyway ) and also the throttle response seems a little sluggish. Is that normal for these? when I stepped on it, it seems like it wanted to decided what gear to throw it in first and than started to pickup. Again I can only base this on other cars I have driven.

Were you driving her in Manual or Automatic? Was VDC turned on or off? I find that mine has a noticeable lag when in VDC ON automatic, and none when in manual VDC OFF.

Also, when you say 'stiff steering,' do you mean it takes a lot of force to turn the wheel, or that the car turns very responsively?

I just turned it on and drove it so whatever normals gets turned on/off at that time. Stiff steering meaning it takes more force to turn the wheel, than alot of other cars/suv/trucks that I have driven. It also had some rust bubbles on the hood of the car so that would have to be fixed at some point

A couple things that would consider to keep looking. I think that the response could be normal depending on what you are used to driving. I never really considered it to be ultra responsive but good for a crossover?

I think that the steering is a little stiffer in general. I know what you mean. I drove a friends Lexus and the steering wheel turns very smoothly...almost unnaturally smooth.

But my friends BMW is even stiffer than the FX. That being said I think it is normal what you are feeling just in comparison to previous cars you have driven.

Again though I would try and find more than one to test drive.
