Infiniti: A Message from Johan de Nysschen to Infiniti Owners and Fans

Individualized personality in the badge? Wouldn't you agree that the name of a product is well below it function in importance to the average consumer? Think of all the cars with awful names throughout the years. In the end does it really matter? Also, what about his example of making smaller FI motors? Wouldn't the 2015 FX38 being faster than the FX50 be way more confusing than this new Q system?

I've been the instrument of change at a few companies. The pay is great, but the job always sucks and in the end everyone hates you. It's like being a hitman without the anonymity.

Think of it as more of a break out by style under the parent brand, and yes the service of a company or the quality of its products is the brand, not vice versa as so many tend to think. Many end users look at Coca Coia and think "the brand" but if CC raised prices out of market spec and started making an unsatisfactory product then "the brand" wouldn't be worth the aluminum cans its printed on. Infiniti's numerical naming convention did have some serious downfalls I'll give you that, your 38, 50 reference is perfect.

Hah, well put.....I am hated. My marketing updates come out every week and everyone reads them waiting to see how far their cheese will be moved......

We should all send Infiniti letters regarding what we think. Who knows...they might listen.
Highly doubt it. Check out the Infiniti page on Facebook. Nothing but hate lol
I'm guessing Infiniti made a mistake by asking the consumers as opposed to the enthusiasts.

Though part of what he said does make sense, i just don't like it. It just sounds too much like a Volvo.

How about more focus on things that really matter. How about better quality leather? Or a transmission that does not bump/knock/drop/slam into 3rd? Or mouldings that don't stress crack? I love my FX but they are focusing on trivial sh!t instead of what really matters to a consumer.

Well there is the audi Q7....for their SUV....so is Audi paying royalty rights to Infiniti then? And if that is the case and you own the letters that you have now, on the ones that you don't have, pay some royalty rights.

He said "Q plus double digit", so I believe this is how Audi got by.

I think the Nissans are getting upgrades, while the Infinitis are just getting a name change.

personally I see good and bad in the renaming, naturally I too initially thought this was just stupid, for sure no one likes change, and whenever someone tries to change something you have some love or passion for then you're naturally going to hate it, there's no point questioning the enthusiasts cause the majority will always resist.but in the end the name or the badge don't mean all that much, make an awesome car that fits what I want and call it a xc4000t, it's the car itself that will define weather I like the xc4000t or not...,

I want a Q99 sedan :)

"So the solution is pretty straightforward - use Q for cars, QX for crossovers, and double digits in increments of ten, to denote hierarchy, linked to the price point of the model, not size and not engine displacement."

forgetting about stopping the renaming for a minute and personally I see a few problems with the new naming architecture. first of all they say it's so they can add new cars to the lineup but then they fill a block of numbers with the existing line... so they have the q50 q60 q70 q80, how do they add a new car that falls between any car in the existing lineup in the future??? especially if they say "in increments of 10", meaning no q65 inbetween the q60 and q70.... second problem I see is, now I know that a g35 coupe shares it's platform with the g35 sedan, I know the g35 coupe is the 2 door version of the g35 sedan and there basically the same car, now with the new naming it's probable that an expensive top of the line 2 door coupe will have a higher number than a more economy minded larger platform sedan, and then the budget version of the 2 door coupe would be below that.... how would anyone be able to instinctively figure out whats what, I can't see how there going to keep it in just increments of 10 and make this work logically...

That's the part I think is completely frivolous. Who cares if a pedestrian can tell which trim level your car might be? If the 2012 QX70 has a different motor than the 2011 QX70, you'll find out the same way you find out now - in a magazine, or a youtube video, or at the dealership. The guy behind you at a light can read the "5.6" badge on the lower left corner of the liftgate and deduce the change...or not.

It sounds to me that Infiniti is not planning on ever having more than 18 models in a given year, which seems like plenty to me.

or lost a bet.....

It was more like a lawsuit back in 2007. I see they move quickly to fix things.

And BMW who has also used engine size after the series name, now uses 328 for thier 2.0 litter turbo charged vehicle. I believe the rationale is that the enginge produces the same power as 2.8 liter V6.

I hope they drop the IPL name too. It would be nice if they stick to what was said a few years back that Infiniti will be based on performance rear wheel platforms, and kill the front wheel drive and CVT platforms. I can care less about the name just make a product that I want.

I can see why they are making change if displacement is going down but the similarity to Audi is what gets it for me and that was before I knew an ex Audi guy was leading the charge. All my friends know the FX and G even non car people now they have to know the Q and QX based on a numeric distinction will be interesting and kind of boring...
