Dear Infiniti fans: We love you dearly. And we know you love the brand. Which means its only natural that you may feel surprised by the announcement that we plan to change our nomenclature philosophy. No one likes change.

It was a tough decision, we like our current model names as much as you do. But we had no choice but to change. Let me explain.

1. We are embarking on a massive product offensive, and these new cars need names.

There are no suitable combinations of Alphanumeric naming options remaining, which are not already trademarked by another automaker. In order to expand our line up with the fascinating new models we are developing, we must create a more flexible nomenclature philosophy.

2. Our new advanced technology engines under development will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient yet more powerful. And we will introduce some exhilarating performance machines in the future. I'm sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8 powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic.

3. Infiniti is becoming a global brand now. We are already active in almost 50 countries, the majority only very recently. Our new customers are unfamiliar with the brand and struggle to understand our range hierarchy. Is a JX above or below an FX? Where does an EX fit? What is the relationship between G and Infiniti M? Research confirms the majority of newcomers to our brand consider the naming to be somewhat arbitrary and confusing.

4. Infiniti owns the naming assets of Q plus double digit, and QX plus double digit. And it is a permanent part of our heritage.

So the solution is pretty straightforward - use Q for cars, QX for crossovers, and double digits in increments of ten, to denote hierarchy, linked to the price point of the model, not size and not engine displacement. And no, we wont call all-wheel drive models Q50X or QX50X. The fact that a model may feature four wheel drive, will be indicated by specific badging describing this feature on the car, and is not part of the model name.

The really exciting implication of all this, is that it prepares the way for the introduction of several fascinating new models, above and below the current line up, a wider range of powertrains, including some truly stunning performance cars in our future.

So there is only good news for all Infiniti fans around the globe. We are working very hard to bring you great products, a great brand and a compelling ownership experience. And we are really confident you will love the new Q50. It's simply that good.

Warmest regards,
Johan de Nysschen

Dear Johan, we the people like the current named models as is and think that every Infiniti being named with the letter Q is quite stupid. Yours truly Matrixx

Stick to the method in use. It may be non-conventional but Infiniti is supposed to be different. If we wanted a run of the mill vehicle
I would drive a Ford or Chevy.

So he wants to take BMW's system of naming vehicles, remove anything that would identify engine size, and just add a "Q" to the beginning... Not impressed...

Sometime in 2000, Pontiac's smart designers, enginers and corporate executives put their heads together and released what was then thought to be the new face and future oif SUV design. Few months later, in 2001, the Aztec hit the roads of America. Fast forward, to the present, everybody is still talking about the Aztec.

It belongs in the same sentence as ugly, fugly, hideous, and anything that is nasty. Infiniti is inviting a similar momentous moment with both the media and the general public with the name / numeric whatever change.

Pretty genius. This sets the stage for new models:
A new chick car called the QT.
Or, if it's a putt-putt variety, the QWF.
And a pervert/molester van called the icQ.

The fuck kind of marketing is this...?
FYI, when these models go out.. people who already have their FXs debaged can sell the emblems on eBay!

^Didn't even think about that lol, fxlr8 dodged a bullet.
I guess the same question applies to g35driver

...a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range...

I have to say, I like the naming convention idea after hearing his explanation. I don't like the new FX being called the QX70, but I think it's a smart move on his part. I've never understood the need for new names on every model that comes out. I'd much prefer the G35 and G37 just be called the G sedan and G coupe, for every year until Infiniti decides they don't need a sports sedan and/or Sport coupe. Similarly, that the FX35, 45, 37, and 50 all just be called the FX and have them be available with different motors/drivetrains. I guess because every letter is already taken...

Johan is totally right though, about people hating change even when it's for their benefit. One of my favorite random quotes goes: "If you want to make some enemies, try to change something."

Foolish move IMO, A limited badge scope that offers no individualized end user personality. Saying that "we own the naming assets of Q" sounds very much like a cop out, "well its all we have so lets expand on it", seriously?

I deal with this everyday, and it sucks.....

Individualized personality in the badge? Wouldn't you agree that the name of a product is well below it function in importance to the average consumer? Think of all the cars with awful names throughout the years. In the end does it really matter? Also, what about his example of making smaller FI motors? Wouldn't the 2015 FX38 being faster than the FX50 be way more confusing than this new Q system?

I've been the instrument of change at a few companies. The pay is great, but the job always sucks and in the end everyone hates you. It's like being a hitman without the anonymity.
