Tesla Model 3

They should have just done a pint sized Model S. I don't know who has designed the fronts of the X and 3 but they look pretty weird. Attractive price though.

I like it except for the big flat front that desperately needs a grille there IMO. They just opened a Tesla dealership down the road... might go look into some info for future, but not going to put down a deposit for something sight unseen like that.

Just curious, what was your appeal to put a deposit down? Do you like everything or is there anything you don't like. They almost have 200,000 reserved, 115,000 of which were before the car was even revealed, but I'm also hearing some are backing out as more photos come out. Just curious to pick the brains of those that are putting down deposits.

In order to make things affordable they stripped out all the things outside like grill and inside and put it all in a center screen (reduced from 17'' to 15''), which I was worried is what they would do to contain costs.

My wife used to have a Saturn ION and we both ended up disliking it because you constantly had to look over to the center for the speedometer. Tesla Model S doesn't have this issue but Model 3 they are putting everything including the speedometer and all the controls in a screen in the center of the car.

But Officer, honestly, I don't know how fast I was going!!:smile (2): (That "center" console).....
The "puckered lips" lips on the front ....find a bra for that! :rotfl:

From what I've heard, they're planning on a heads up display to augment the gauge cluster. I don't like the front end, but the price and performance are an interesting combo.

I don't mind the front end. grill is something we are used to, so now that it's gone we feel something is missing. I think it will grow on people.

I think the missing grill will grow on people as well. On the Model S it did serve a function though. There were flaps that would open/close to help cool the batteries if needed. When closed, it had one of the best coefficients of drag for a production car.

I guess people are used to Tesla being a really nice, high end car. So they expected a really nice car, but that wouldn't be doable at this price point. It seems like a really stripped down car. But I guess it's perfect for someone who drives something like a Civic or Camry or other plain type car.

exactly what I was thinking too. They wanted Model S performance and refinement for 35000$.

I don't miss the grille, but this thing looks designed to have a grille the as an after thought smoothed it over. the front is terrible on an otherwise pretty decent car. I am still not ready to jump on the electric car yet tho

I am sure someone will come up with something to cut up the bumper and install the grill. 200k plus pre-orders, someone will be willing to do something about the grill

If i follow thru and the front end stays as is, i might have vinyl sticker cut to fake a grill(carbon fiber could be cool)

The reservation is refundable, if i decide not to go thru with it. My family is getting bigger and we might be into a minivan or QX56 within the time Tesla starts taking actual sales orders, so i can still bail out if needed.

The appeal to me is less maintenance(worrying about wipers and tires "only")and no more paying for gas. I was considering a nissan leaf whenever gas was $4 a gallon. I still have my FX45, but also drive a 07 Camry during the week to save on gas, so the the tesla would replace the camry.

No more oil changes, tranny fluid, diff fluids, coolant flushes, etc could get pretty boring though. I have 2 daughters now and don't have time to tinker on cars like i used to.

Now it all makes sense. Here's the redesigned Model S.

I thought this Model 3 photoshop looked good. Reminds me of a Porsche. Maybe makes sense going that design route as they don't have a front engine either.

I don't mind the front end, but something to break up the lines wouldn't hurt. I'd have to see it in person though.

FWIW, I saw a model X on the road and it was horrendous. In pictures, I didn't think it looked that bad but in real life it's huge and the proportions are very weird. I'm sure they did it for interior space, but it's very bulbous and bulgy. It's also much taller than I imagined it would be, I was stopped at a light next to it and it towered over my FX. Wife had thought she wanted one initially when she saw the pictures but not after seeing the real thing.

When the Model S came out they were everywhere in NorCal. And as they filtered thru the eastward, I saw there was more talk of wanting that car than any other car I've heard in a long time. It'll be the same way with the 3, but with a more accessible price. I think tesla is going to bank. Good for them.
