Engine Error Code P0305

Hi All,

I'm a FX-driver from Belgium, but a long-time reader for a long time here :)

Sadly, my first topic is one for some problems.

Today, I wanted to leave home, when my FX had some trouble to start. After a few attempts, finally started and all was normal ... at first sight.

When accelerating, I was losing power and the engine was a little shaky. A few seconds later, the engine-light started to flash, so I pulled over immediatly.

Shut down the engine and read out the error code:

P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0300: Random Misfire

Now, I started the engine and it started normal, but with the sound of knocking metal, following the rpm's of the engine. Higher rpm, faster knocking ... So I shut it down again. Sound came from the lower part of the engine

When looking under the hood, nothing seemed wrong, behind the wheel, I saw greenish fluid. I have a picture, but I'm not allowed by the forum-software because I'm a new member :)

Any advice?

Thanks!!

Cylinder 5 misfire could be a bad spark plug but most likely will be a bad coil for that cylinder. I would change it out.

Thanks for the advice.

Spark-plugs have been replaced a few months ago. And just 3 days ago car had heavy maintainance too.

Can the knocking metal sound be caused by this issue?

Thanks

Not sure but replacing the number 5 coil should fix the misfire and then take it from there.

To test the coil, simply swap cylinder 5 with another cylinder coil. If the misfire moves to new cylinder, it's the coil, if it stays on 5, you have another problem.

But a misfire wouldn't cause a metal knocking sound. If your car is running normally but has a metal knocking sound, that's not a misfire. What heavy maintenance did you have done?

Greenish fluid is typically coolant.

just to add, I had similar code thrown on one of the coils. Changing the coil solved the issue. But what you would experience with bad coil, is a rough idling (car shakes, as if your engine about to pop out from bay), a random engine shutdown (I was driving my wife to work and engine just died, letting me cruise until stop - unfortunately, every system is dead, including power steering, which makes turning really hard. I did exactly what shadow suggested, and it turned out to be just a bad coil. $75 later I am running strong again

Hi,

Went to the dealership today. They put the FX on the computer to read the fault-codes:

P0305
P0300

Also, they reset all errors and simulated a misfire by computer. They don't have an idea what the ticking sound is, but one of the techs started about burned engine valves?

They told me to 'wait and see' if the shutdown comes back. I had to drive about 150km today, didn't experience any power loss but sometimes, when stopping at red light, the engine is a little shaky and the ticking is still there, but less when the engine is warmed up ...

They also said they never had to replace the coils ... never??? Also, they didn't find the source of the green fluid. All levels (coolant, oil, steering fluid, brake fluid) were normal. For the other stuff, this is done on Monday:

- Replacing front shock absorbers
- Replace engine oil
- Replace air filter
- replace cabine air filter
- replace oil filter

for a healthy 1305€ :)

I know that our radiators tend to Crack I had antifreeze coming from somewhere a few summers ago and after looking and looking some more found a small Crack in the radiator. Changed it and all was good.

We checked the radiator and didn't find anything wrong with it.

The ticking-sound is very similar with what can be found on youtube, about broken chain-tensioners, perhaps I need to look at these

Something new today :)

While driving on the highway, the 4WD-warninglight starts to blink, once every 1-2 second ... Don't know if it's related the what I describe above or not ...
