Bumper Repair and Lower Trim Paint Cost

Hi there,

you guys know I always consult with the IS before doing anything on the FX!

someone hit my rear bumper in a parkade a while ago. the bumper has some scruffs and a small bend/dent. the bumper isn't cracked but my rear bumper reflector is cracked. its been very annoying to look at..

there is a professional auto collision shop that can repair and repaint my entire bumper for 375.00. I asked him since he's getting the paint mix for my vehicle, if he could also paint the lower plastic trim/lower body liner around the entire vehicle.

he gave me a quote of 475.00 for the complete job (repair rear bumper + paint rear bumper + paint lower trims). I've been meaning to plastidip the lower trims for while now but wanted to hold off until i got the bumper repaired but figured this might be a good opportunity to let the shop do it?

does that sound reasonable pricing wise? thank you in advance!

i wish i could post pics to show you guys but theres no attachment option for some reason :eek.:

That is way too cheap to properly paint the lower trim. $100? That's not in the realm of reasonable. It's textured plastic which has to be sanded down and they're going to have to use a lot of adhesion promoter and flex additive. I think he is quoting you to just spray the parts which is not going to work, the paint will flake/chip/peel very quickly. Maybe $100 extra is reasonable just to paint the rear bumper lower trim since he has to repaint the rest anyways.

but wouldn't the rear bumper lower trim flake too since its the same material as the rest of the trim?

how is everyone else painting their lower trim?

If they do paint the lower rear bumper trim, I'd hope that a professional shop would know to prep the surface properly for paint and use the correct additives. It's not really that hard, but the material just has to be prepped. My point was that there is no way they can properly paint all of the lower trim for $100 properly, there is too much labor involved. To paint all of the lower trim and the wheel liners, I once got a quote over $1K and I've heard of quotes closer to $2K. Painting flexible plastic is more involved than painting body panels.

FWIW, I once saw a white FX on the highway that had all of it's lower trim painted. Looked decent from a distance and as it got closer, I noticed that there was black spots on some of the trim where the paint had peeled off. And on top of that, the shop didn't match the white well so it was a few shades off. It seems like a simple enough thing to paint the lower trim, but it's more involved that most people think.

sounds good!! thanks so much for the input shadow.

i emailed him asking if the paint will stay and hold onto the plastic trim.

his response was "yes i will have to wash it and degrease it then apply plastic adhesion promoter, then epoxy primer, then paint."

not sure if that demonstrates that this guy knows what hes doing or not cause i dont know anything about auto body. but i have to get my rear bumper repaired either way. fingers crossed i guess!

i got my front bumper done with the black trim redone. Cost me $900 and that was with a deal.

Our garage door hit the rear bumper of our 2004 FX35 when the door was closing due to the vehicle not being pulled in deeply enough in the garage. Then, not knowing the metal on the garage door had scraped the bumper on the way down, it scraped it again on the way up! Big time scrape! Could not stand to look at it. After a little research, choose a local Carsmetics franchise mainly due to their 5-star rating on Yelp. Carsmetics did an outstanding job as the bumper looks like like new! Total cost was about $350!

$350 is fair. Just make sure they do it right and strip old paint. Area painting is never good. They had to paint the entire bumper cover. Ask if they oven dry it and if they have a "clean room" for painting.

I think a lot of the cost is going to depend on the area you live in. If there is a lot of competitors then you should be able to get good work at a cheaper price. I am in the DFW area and I got a quote to pop small dent out of my rear quarter panel, reshoot my whole passenger side of the vehicle and reshoot the front bumper for 600. but also just in the one block radius there were eight body shops. :rotfl:

update: got rear ended, getting bumper repaired. insurance wont repair my existing scuff but the shop quoted me 2 hours labour so I paid 150.00 to have everything done right.

scuff was on the driver side rear reflector and the accident took place center. It was a small fender bender but the total tab just for the accident was 1500.00

at that price they will replace your bumper cover so the repair to your previous damage should be no more than a reflector replacement. the total price sounds about right. they might have to spray your fenders to blend them in with the new paint on the bumper.
