Aftermarket rims shaking

Hi,

I just installed my aftermarket rims 22x 10.5 all around but i have notice shaking in my steering wheel sometimes between 80 and 120km/h and when I hit bumps in the road.
I have gotten the wheels rebalanced twice just to make sure and I'm still having this issue. Im also using a universal 5mm spacer all around I don't no if this could be causing the issue????

What I find weird is with the OEM 21" wheels I have no issues whats so ever.

I had this same problem on my stocks 21's after I got spacers. I balanced them 3 times and right when I took off the spacer it fixed the issue.

Do you think I need hub centric spacers? the spacers used are just a plate with lots of holes to fit different bolt patterns it does not fit snug with the hub.

There is your problem right there, whenever you buy spacers always get the hubcenteric

Thank you my friend

I rode like that for a full year could that have caused any tire wear issues such as feathering?

If your spacer isn't centered, it could cause the shaking. Keep in mind, that 5mm spacers are so small the rim is still fitting onto the factory hub so it will always be centered.

It's not likely to have caused any tire wear issues. Any tire wear issues would be if your alignment is off.

I went through all of the above with my 22's. I have +10 offset with no spacers and used hub centric rings as well. I had the alignment done, I had all four wheels road force balanced, I had the Rotors on car turned. None of the above helped. The only thing that helped was tightening the rack tension bolt. https://www.infinitiscene.com/search/1/?q=11604-Steering-wheel-shake-fixed
My thought is that any play at all is amplified as we move the wheels out further coupled with wider tires and possibly more weight.I run my stock wheels in the winter months and never had a shake issue and without changing anything other than the wheel setup the shake would come back. Like I was saying the only fix for me was the tightening of the rack tension bolt and even that wouldn't get rid of the shake completely but did make it 90 percent better. And the other downside is the adjustment will last for a while but I had to do it again about once a year. I'm thinking of just getting rid of my 22's for this very reason. Just tired of dealing with it and never had issue one with OE's.

Im so confused after the last post from MTN. My tire guy as ordered me hub centric spacers but he told me that it out set the rims out another 5mm for a total of 10mm, I hope this will fix the problem but I'm also afraid how its going to look like with the tire coming out another 5mm for a total of 10mm. anyone have this setup 22 x 10.5 with 10mm spacers?

You could have gotten 5mm spacers that are hubcentric in that they fit over the hub snugly. It seems your tire guy thought you wanted the hub centric spacers that come with a hubcentric ring on as well. Those only come in 10mm or thicker since a 5mm doesn't need it. A 5mm is so thin that your factory hub sticks out so your wheel fits on the hub. What are your wheel offsets? Without knowing that, no one can tell you if another 5mm spaced out will be a problem.

FWIW, your wheels were always centered since it sat on the OEM hub. Do you have centering rings for your aftermarket wheels so they mate to the OEM hub diameter? Most aftermarket wheels have a larger hub that they then use plastic adapter rings to fit a range of cars. If you're missing those, that would be a more likely culprit than the spacers.

And MTN has a 1st gen FX which has notorious steering shake issues. Tightening the steering rack is the common fix for that, but I don't know if the 2nd gen is plagued with the same problem.

I've personally never had issues caused by wheel spacers hub centric and otherwise. I've used universal ones on other cars and never had any shake as long as there is a hub for the wheels to fit on (I'd never run a thick spacer with no hubcentric ring as that's just dangerous). I currently run 15mm and 35mm spacers on 20x10.5" wheels and my effective offsets are +5 and +0 which means my wheels currently stick out over 3" further than OEM wheels and I have zero shake. The only time I've had shake issues were bad tires or damaged wheels. 22"s are hard to balance and you need to be more precise since they are typically heavier than stock.

I would put your OEM 21"s on with the 5mm spacers and see if it still shakes. If it doesn't, it's not the spacers.

That's really for OEM wheels with the deep hub. Aftermarket wheels will come with hubcentric rings which are much shallower and there won't be this issue.

Plus OP was running 5mm spacers so there wouldn't be a lip on there, the wheel mated to OEM hub.

yea he did say aftermarket. I just saw 21" in the last sentence and went with it. My bad

As Shadow said earlier, are you running hub centering rings with your aftermarket wheels, if not, this could be the problem.

Thank you for all the replies if this does not get fixed tomorrow I will be chucking my niche milans in the garbage I hate driving my car in that condition it takes the fun out.

Good luck. I sure hope you get it resolved. Many of us run aftermarket wheels with spacers and have no problems at all.
