Replace Yaw Sensor in 2003 FX45

My dealer wants to charge me >1K to replace the Yaw Sensor. Does anyone know how to replace the sensor. I can't figure out how to get to it. My plan is to buy a used from ebay. Thanks for any help.

Yaw sensor should be somewhere under the armrest in the center console. So it's not that hard to get to and as you've seen on eBay, it's ~$200 for the part vs. $1K + from the dealer.

I'm trying to find a detailed DIY set of instructions, ideally with pictures, before I proceed. I started to take off the center console but got stuck. I was also not sure exactly where the sensor was. Any links to info?
 
Some info seems to suggest it is under the arm rest. Never having done much on a car I'm hoping to find a DIY for exactly this situation. If I can't in the next day I'll attempt myself.
 
I don't think there is a specific DIY for exactly this situation. It doesn't fail often and the FX isn't that popular of a car. Sometimes you just have to go for it and give it a shot.
 
After reading up on Mitchell1, I confirm that the Yaw/G-Sensor is located under the armrest. However, I then read that after replacing it, it needs calibrating which requires a device, a Consult-II.

It specifically says that the car should not be driving without calibration. Makes sense considering the Yaw sensor is what tells your traction/ABS system that you're going out of control. I guess that what you could do is replace it yourself, then have the dealer calibrate it. I'm sure they wouldn't charge you 700$ for that.

If you do have the Consult-II, I can give you the procedure to calibrate it.

It looks like I have to remove the center console (silver) before I can remove the hand rest. I assume I have to remove the entire assembly that has the arm rest. Any likes on that part? I found info on the center console and the arm rest itself but not the unit that has the arm rest.
 
From the image of the Yaw sensor location, it looks like the sensor is under the cup holders portion of the center console. Hope that helps! After reading more on that sensor, it seems like the 2wd and awd models have different yaw sensors. The 2wd model is a yaw rate/side G sensor and the awd one has that plus the decel G sensor. This procedure is for the decel G sensor so I guess thats only for the awd model. Not sure if yours is 2wd or awd but here is the procedure anyways:



CALIBRATION OF DECEL G-SENSOR (AWD MODEL)

NOTE: After removing/installing or replacing yaw rate/side/decel G-sensor, ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit), suspension components, or after adjusting wheel alignment make sure to calibrate of decel G- sensor before running vehicle.


CAUTION: To calibrate decel G-sensor, make sure to use CONSULT-II. (Adjustment cannot be done without CONSULT-II.)


1. Stop vehicle with front wheels in straight-ahead position.

CAUTION: • The work should be done at a horizontal place when vehicle is in the unloaded vehicle condition.
• Keep all tires inflated to correct pressures. Adjust the tire pressure to the specified pressure value.

2. Connect CONSULT-II and CONSULT-II CONVERTER to data link connector on vehicle, and turn ignition switch ON (do not start engine).

CAUTION: If CONSULT-II is used with no connection of CONSULT-II CONVERTER, malfunctions might be detected in self- diagnosis depending on control unit which carry out CAN communication.

3. Touch "ABS", "WORK SUPPORT" and "DECEL G-SEN CALIBRATION" on CONSULT-II
screen in this order. Refer to CONSULT-II BASIC OPERATION PROCEDURE.
4. Touch "START".

CAUTION: Set vehicle as shown in the display.



5. After approximately 10 seconds, touch "END". (After approximately 60 seconds, it ends automatically.)
6. Turn ignition switch OFF, then turn it ON again.

CAUTION: Be sure to carry out above operation.


7. Run vehicle with front wheels in straight-ahead position, then stop.

8. Select "DATA MONITOR", "SELECTION FROM MENU", and "DECEL G-SEN" on



CONSULT-II screen. Then make sure "DECEL G-SEN" is within 0 +/-0.08 G. If value is more than specification, repeat steps 3 to 7.
9. Erase memory of ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) and ECM.
10. Turn ignition switch OFF.

Once you've pulled the silver center piece, you can remove the rest of it pretty easily. There are some screws toward the front that you will see, and some at the back on the sides. I can't remember if there are any in the middle, but if there are, you can pretty easily see them and get to them. I haven't done this in over a year, but at one point I removed it several times to run wires for audio equipment and it was a very straightforward process. I didn't have any instructions, but once the silver console pops out, everything is very clear. There are no hidden screws or bolts.

OK. I was able to get to the unit. The part number is 47931-CL80A. New it is ~$1000.00. I plan on buying a used one. I’ll check ebay. Is there a way to test the unit outside of the car? I assume that I can still drive the car with the unit out. I’m assuming that is the case since it is not working now. Can you drive without calibration?
 
It turns out that the part number on the yaw sensor in the car is actually 47930-CL80A. It is also marked with 4WD. Most of the used ones on ebay are 47931-7S100 4WD. Does anyone know if this can be used in place of 47930-CL80A.

I found this unit (Consult II with USB 14 Pin DDL OBD Diagnostics Inerface Tool for Nissan vehicles) on ebay for $27. Is this the correct one?
 
Consult 2/3 are pretty expensive for the real deal. Think $1000-7000, clones are out there but I haven't seen one that work.

If u do get it and it works please post up, I wish u good luck with this.

I've been assuming that the yaw senor is bad based on the report from the dealer. The symptoms are that the VDC and Slip lighs remain on and the cruise does not work. However, I've read on the web that that there could be other reasons for these lights. Anyway to be certain it is the yaw sensor? A simple test?
