Plastidip Clear Rear Trim

At first, I wanted to dip my rear trim and emblems black with gloss, like I did with my grille. But while browsing videos on YouTube I stumbled upon a video showing the Plastidip clear making chrome into brushed aluminum. I thought this was a good idea and saw somebody comment about it on here saying it would match the roof rails. Took pictures.

After - 3 coats

I need to redo bottom trim piece but other than that I think it came out well. Just some ideas for you guys. Might be doing door handles as well but not sure if it would last long. Let me know what you think!

BTW was thinking maybe outline the INFINITI lettering with black... any thoughts about that?

The handles will last 6months to a year. Mine lasted a while. After that it'll start looking weird with surface scratches

That's what I thought. Maybe add more coats? They also have this new Plastdip that protects it and makes it smoother. They use it on cars that are fully dipped, not sure how it would cover clear dip.

Really wish this thread had been updated. I wouldn't have bothered. Love the look, but zero durability on chrome. Bubbling at letters, and handle Scratched just from driving and wind. Stuff is junk for this application. Before I peel it off, thought I'd share some pics.

GTO - Wow what the heck happen? Mine was on for 6+ months and could pass as oem? No bubble or anything. Just a tip:
1. Clean everything is ISP. (91% alcohol)
2. Bottle says 6-12 inches but I sprayed 3-4 inches to make it smoother. Each layer I waited 15-20 mins. 4-5 layers per part
3. I don't care who says it, but 1st coat is a light mist maybe 6-9 inches then next 3-4 coast come on heavier about 4 inches away

Yeah what WiND said. You really need to make sure it's a clean and dry surface for that stuff to stick on, which was probably the reason for bubbling. As for durability, yeah this clear PDS is more thinner than regular black so door handles wouldn't hold up as well. There's the DYC DipCoat that would probably make it more durable.

I really like this. I wanted to do this years ago to match the aluminum roof rails, before this stuff probably ever came out. Lemberg, to date how is it holding up for you?

Im actually gona do this myself. Was thinking of doing all the chrome flat black. I usually order my stuff from dipyourcar.com The other day I strolled through pepboys and guess what i saw. A huge ass rack of every freaking color!! And what caught my eyes was this plasti dip can that was smoke color heres a pic of it. So i thought to myself what if it gave your chrome a black chrome effect?..... Hmmmmm still debating on going back for a can just to test it out. Might look sick if it comes out dark chrome!

It's great so far. Given I don't exactly put my hands on it everyday so I would be different when thinking about doing the handles. But I power wash it and everything. I'll try to update with some pics soon.

Plastidip smoke gives it a matte look. It would appear darker which would be cool. I always thought about how it would look it you did a smoke then use the gloss top coat to give off a vinyl-like or niteshade-like tint.

I also just read on dipyourcar forums that somebody did not advise dipping plastic chrome pieces with smoke because it runs? Not sure if I'm allowed to link to other forums.

Everything looked very clean to me before I sprayed it on. Dunno.
@ Lemberg, is it still holding on OK? No scratches either. I found the finish really too delicate.
