Hey guys,

I am looking to play around with a High-Gloss Plasti-dip. Ive been wanting to paint some of the chrome, but feel like going the plasti-dip route is better at the moment to see what color scheme I like and what I'd want to keep permanent?

Here is the photoshop I've done so far. (newbie photo-shopper here) Just trying to look at different options, labeled them 1, 2, 3.

The tail-lights are a little darker on here than what they will look like when its Smoked out. Also, regarding the wheels, do you think I should make the little chrome circles/beads/bullets/whateverthehellyoucallthem black or leave them chrome to outline the inner wheel?

Just an idea of how it will look. What do you think? What changes should i make?

Thanks guys!

I call them "Rivet" ? I like to have a little bling as it is. I would darken the tails and the side vent for sure.

Great. Since I'm about to get the hit and run damage repaired. I will start with the tails and side vent. Going to pickup some plasti now. Is it just soap&water, then 4-5 coats?

I'm with Andy on blacking out the side vent too, otherwise it would stick too much. With wheels I would also leave the lugs chrome/silver or perhaps even leave the lip unpainted and just the center of the wheel. Like this ...

the lip IMO will flow better with the lower chrome piece, and when in motion the lugs will create a small inner circle which will flow nicely on top of the brake drum. Kind of like in Andy's avatar, just skinnier

Silly questions;

Best to take off the side vent to do the dip?

Regarding the handles, should I just use tape around the handle?

Also, I'm not going to order it online, best place to get it? Any other brands that are better?

You should mask off a "square" around everything because it will make it easier to peel the extra dip you don't need. (instead of overspray)

the more coats = easier to peel. I recommend spraying it with a gun instead of the cans because it will come out better but if you don't have the equipment just be sure to heat up the cans first before spraying.

You can buy spray cans at Lowe's Home depot of usually black cans only (and 14.5ml liquid). Advance auto has some other colors and sometimes the glossifier etc.

Otherwise you'll probably have to order the cans online. Do do all of that trim you probably need at least 3-4 cans (I'm guessing) if you're spraying. and around 2-3 cans of glossifier. (guesstimate)

I've been playing around with plastidip a lot with my side project (z)

Thanks! This maybe a silly question, but heating up the cans? Like, throw these babies in the microwave? Oven Or hair dryer. [emoji23][emoji23]

LOL whatever you do don't throw them in a microwave. Just use a heat gun or hair dryer to evenly warm up the paint inside to get a nice even spray.

and glad you like my idea of your design :)

Any chance you could lighten the taillights? I just want then tinted enough so the red doesn't come off so strong.

Also, what's the time limit between layers?

1. Wait 15 minutes between layers.

2. Try not to do it directly in sunlight.

3. between 15 and 30 degress celcius outside is a good time to do it.

4. To warm the cans, have them in hot tap water (this makes the finish smooth)

5. Shake the cans real good between, and during coats.

6. Plastidip Smoke can be used to darken your tails without making them black

Awesome! Also, I'm having them done by a shop. (Taken off and painted/smoked on the inside) they have 3 levels of darkness, I was thinking light would be the best?

Go with the light smoke, you still want to see they're red. If it's too dark, it looks really bad. You just want to lessen the contrast some.

How do you plan on leaving the bolts on the wheels exposed with plastidip?

In the process of picking up the glossifier at advanced.

Either of these correct?
