Transmission oil change

This is a little off subject, but I had a toyota tundra and at the time was driving serious miles for work. I took it in the dealer for some maintenance and such, I asked about changing out the tranny fluid. The mechanic of 20 plus years told me that if I was going to change the fluid to just change the transmission as it would only be a matter of time before I would be changing it anyway. I don't know how correct he was, but I put 247k miles on it with zero transmission issues.

I'm confused, a mechanic told you that instead of just a fluid change you should change the entire transmission? Was there a reason for this?

Or was he just trying to garner the biggest upsell in the history of the world?

I think he meant that with that kind of mileage, if you change the fluid, the transmission will soon fail and you'll have to change it anyways. Or best salesman ever...
