Tablet Install

Has anyone installed a tablet in their car that is removable, maybe just put it on some kind of a mount that's easily reversible? I am looking at those Kuda mounts that go on top of dash but they only come in black leather and I'd need wheat to match interior. Also they are 78$. I am looking to get a nexus 7 and I would like to use it to watch video/gps... but I am having a hard time finding a location for it and a mount.

If anyone has a tablet in their car, can you post some pictures and tell me what you used to mount it, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

While probably not the depth you want are going for.... There are some examples out there. lol

Scroll down to the second post.

EDIT: Oh and take a look at Panavise, they make a holder for the FX (both 2003-2006 & 2006+). I have one in my car and its great. The bonus of it is it has a standard AMPS mounting plate, so you can buy any number of mounts and use it.

Yea I saw that thread, and it's pretty crazy what he did. I just don't wanna take on that kind of project, nor do I think I have skill for something like that. Also removal of the tablet isn't easy and I want to take out the tablet when I leave the car, or go somewhere with it.

Do you have a picture of the one you are using? I am assuming it's for the phone and not tablet?

Thanks. Yea I saw it in your garage. That seems to be working for a phone, but a 7" tablet wouldn't fit properly. I am leaning towards those suction cup ones, but I am not sure if they will work on top of the dash. That would be the easiest way to hold it, remove it when I leave the car and no modifications necessary.

There was another member with a silver 1st gen that had a cuda mount/pedestal installed. He later traded the ride for the GTR. Can't remember the name at the moment but I'm sure he's in the Garage.

Thanks guys, I found it. He used a regular size ipad, which is HUGE!!! didn't specify what he was using to support it there tho.

Are you talking about the dash suction cup mounts? I think those you glue a flat plastic disk and then suction to that. I am not a huge fan of those, but better than screwing it into the dash. Suctioning off the window, you need a long arm because of the window angle. Especially if you want to reach it to push the buttons. This will cause a lot of bouncing as well. I would not recommend it.

A better option for a tab: I have seen several of those gooseneck mounting things used from a passenger seat bolt. not necessarily the prettiest way to go, but you can at least get it where you want it. just have to find an exposed bolt to pull it off of. Definitely would need to get a sturdy one, the cheap ones bounce all over even with a standard phone.

I use a solid boom window suction mount for a 5" phone, and its much less bouncy. I have it on the drivers window side. There it is close enough to reach. Ends up right at the steering column.

Another way to think about would be doing one of the put your phone screen on the stock monitor mods, there are several of them floating around. You would still need to interact through the phone/tab but you could see everything on the dash screen.

How would one do this? I don't have navi in my car, so I doubt that it's even possible

I believe what it does is activate the reverse camera input, and switch to the link from the phone. I believe all 06+ have the full color screen, and reverse camera built in. You then have some sort of a module that interacts with your device, and sends the feed to the screen.

I think there are a plethora of different combinations that have their own threads in the forum.

There is this thread, which is being talked of right now, it is written for 09+, but may still work.

I also recall there was a writeup where they took out the Bose center channel speaker, and turned that into a flip up screen. Not sure if the nexus would fit in there, but you might be able to use that as the mounting point for it.

Thanks for the info. I read through that thread and it's not something I am interested in doing. Seems like a lot of work and $ and the picture quality just wouldn't be there with the OEM screen. I did see someone post something about these magnetic phone/tablet holders and I think that would be the way to go for me. The mount is really small, and I just have to have a magnet on the back of the tablet. I forget what they are called now tho, Steelie or something like that
