Hi im new here. My current car awd suabru is dying slowly so am deciding of getting an FX. I have been researching constantly on luxury crossovers. I like some European but don't want to get raped for repairs on buying a used older bmw, or MB. so i will stick with Japanese as i have owned a few and not to many issues.

Enough with the back story

Which fx seems to be the most reliable 1st gen fx35 or 2nd gen fx35? Not intereted in the fx 45 or fx50 as i don't need a V8. I just recently joined the site love all the info. So can you guys who have owned one please let me know.

Thanks

Riderb

1st gens are more reliable in my experience, but then again matters on how the previous owner kept it. They might of been abused and overheated the crap out of it.
You might find a 2nd gen FX better kept than a 1st.

my 1st gen was super reliable and my 2nd gan also is. The 1st Gen FX35 sometimes has oil consumption issues. The 1st gen has tons of TSBs over the years for randoms. Obviously 1st gens are going to be older, and cheaper. Drive both, see which you like better.

Depends on the previous history. I bought mine from a one owner corporate CEO, who had all maintenance done at Infiniti. Needless to say the only issue I had was replacing the starter. Engine drives practically like brand new. Good luck with your search!

When did the 35's have oil consumption issues? I know the revup VQ35 did, but that's only in manual vehicles.

ok thanks still looking into it. im reading everything known to man about this vehicle. im leading towards an 2008 but the 2009 and up is so nice. I love the interior and the music box hard drive. Cost is an issue so if money was not a factor i would get a 2009 and up other than that im leaning towards a first Gen. Just want the best reliability for the money

thanks for the input but more opinions is appreciated

Also take note of, 1st gen fxs are firmer than 2nd. If you're not the type to like a firm sporty feel, then get 2nd gen. A solution to that is getting the 18inch wheels instead of the 20s.

Well regardless im putting the truck on 18 inches for summer and winter seasons. If it doesn't come with 18's already. I hear the 1st gen is firmer which doesn't bother me. Plus winter tires

as far as i know the oil consumption issues was the fx 45

At this point, the newest 1st gen is 6 years old. So even a good condition one is going to need or start needing somewhat expensive maintenance and repairs soon. If you can afford it, I'd get the 2nd gen if you like the way it drives. Newer car, maybe still under warranty and significant changes. It's quite a bit faster, gets better mileage, and has more technology. I prefer the looks of the 1st gen, but if I were buying one now, I'd get the 2nd.

i was thinkng the same thing. ^ years is getting a little old but I might still do it if i get a low mileage one. My first choice is the 2nd gen i love the styling of it but the first gen still has all the characterisc i want in a truck/crossover. I never new the 2nd gen was better in gas mileage:smile (2)::good:. thanks for the input shadow and everyone else

it all depends on your budget. Both are just as reliable. First gen has more of a sporty feel / road feed back with a hint of luxury. 2nd gen is more luxury with a hint of sport. I have an 08 and had no major issues other then maintenance.

i get that feeling that 1st gen more aport than luxury. Not saying its not luxurious but 2nd gen wins in the luxury department IMO. I use to have a truck for years until an unfortunate accident. Now im ready to move back into trucks as something else on my car failed today

If only I could walk into a showroom and buy a brand new first gen again. I would totally do it.

The best compromise to me would be a 1st generation exterior with a 2nd gen drivetrain and interior.

Even with a lower mileage one, rubber still ages and cracks, gaskets harden, plastic gets brittle, etc. Some things are mileage dependent and some are age dependent. And often, lower mileage older cars have seen a lot of city driving which means a lot of start/stops, heat cycles, and idling. My '07 FX has 53K on it which is relatively low, but it's been almost all city driving so I've gone through brake pads like I've had it for 100K. My '07 BMW only has 41K on it but has required a decent amount of maintenance just because driving a car 2 miles and then shutting off isn't really good for it.

2nd gen has the 7 speed transmission which helps a lot with mileage.

in regards to meme405 comment so true perfect combo i can't get over the 2nd gen interior near perfection.

re shadow yes i have to say mileage isn't everything because other parts get old too so i see your point in going 2nd gen as it would probably save on maintenance in the long run.

depends what year you get though. 08 from 09 is only 1 year apart. maintenance on a 2nd gen will be much more due to its advanced build.
