Advice on purchasing 04 Fx35

Hello IS,

I am looking into purchasing a family friends 2004 Infiniti Fx35 with 92,xxx miles on it. I am not sure at the moment if it is Rwd/Awd or any packages he added but he is willing to sell it to me for $6k. He has had all maintenance and service done up until the 90k mark with his local Infiniti Dealer. Everything is in very good condition besides the driver seat has tears in the leather. I am going to check for oil in the plug cylinders, but replacing the valve covers is not to bad. I was wondering if there are any other issues I should be aware to check out.

Any advice would be great!

Yes it still has a clean title. He is my sisters ex bf so that is where the deal arises. He told me it is either me or carmax at the end of the week. He picked up a new Evoque this past weekend and told me it would be a great second car for me while I finish college. My daily is a 07 Civic Si sedan so it would be primarily when I go out with my girlfriend and parking at school, as they always try to steal parts off my car.

That is what I was thinking. I looked up prices and they range from 10-14k range. Just figured I see if there were any major problems it might have.

umm nothing major to be honest, unless it was abused then ill take his word for it

Haha 10-4. He is dropping it off this weekend for me to have a look I will post some pictures of it then. I know its silver with black interior but other than that I have no clue. He lives in the Hollywood Hills area so if I do not end up purchasing I figure I can pass the deal onto someone else local to him as I do not like carmax.
 
That's a great deal! You could always buy it and resell it for more.

Just a tip to identify AWD or RWD. Look at the VIN number and if it has a W in it = AWD, if it has a U = RWD.

Examples:
AWD = JNRAS08Wxxxxxxxxx
RWD = JNRAS08Uxxxxxxxxx

I think I recall him having the Dash replaced a few years back along with some seat parts because the seat switches or heating pads stopped working. I am not 100% sure but thank you for all of that! I was having my doubts but looks like it must be a steal as I know he babied it all of the time.

I'll try to get in touch with him and see if he is cool with that. He is usually really busy during the week hence the reason I am unable to get the vin or any other info on it at the moment.

j/k advance congrats! 6k with even higher miles and some problems will still be a steal.

As a rule of thumb if you can turn around and sell it immediately for more than what you bought it, its safe to say its a good deal...lol
 
hahahahaha oh my that was too funny. I literally burst out laughing in front of people at work and I got the stink eye from them. I can't wait to look at it this weekend, it has been about 5 months since I last took a drive in it.

Ya I just wanted to make sure there were not any major issues with them. I can do most repairs myself but I did not want to purchase it at 6k if there were some major repairs commonly needed. My sister actually told me he had it smogged for me on Monday, so it looks like everything is good to go. I will update with pics as soon as I get to take a look at it which will probably be sat morning. Hopefully there is not any issues or they are minor at that. This week of work/school needs to go by fast!!
 
smog or not, if there is a bill of sale and pink slip of sale you got to re smog it
 
unless this was a recent change, smog test is usually valid for 90 days and required during transfer. i dont think it needs another test.
 
^ you are right, but recently when i bought my m3 they wanted a reinspection which costed 50 bucks. Or a current report re validated..
 
My sister brought it down last night. It drives excellent and everything is great besides a few minor scrapes and dings and also the drivers seat does have a few tears as well but other than that it is great. The dash was replaced two years ago and seems to be in great shape. He also had the radiator replaced a few weeks ago as he believes a rock got it on the freeway. I have not torn anything apart to check for oil in the plug cylinder yet but I will sometime this week if time allows.

Forgot to mention it is RWD, Sunroof, Heated Seats, and Bose system among other things so I assume it has one of the packages.

Also looking at H&R springs but I am unsure what aftermarket shocks to go with. I wish there were some Koni-Yellows to mate them with but so far I only see KYBs.

Hopefully not as he just did it. I have never run into that issue before when selling or purchasing used vehicles. I will find out Tuesday as I have an appointment with the DMV to transfer ownership.

I bought my AWD 04' FX in August for $13,900 from an Infinti dealer. It had 82,000 miles on it. So I would say the one you are looking at is a steal. It had ripped up seats as well. Just take it to a reputable upholstery place or custom shop and you'll be good. Make sure it is inspected and jump on that. You can always buy a third party extended warranty just in case.
