Most cost effective intake/exhaust mods

There is a mod that can be done with the cipher tool. It alters the timing by +2. People have said it increases their throttle response. I did the mod so early on when I got my FX that I don't much remember the difference.

Search up +2 timing and it should come up with a wack of information about it.

Also a SRI will shorten up throttle response by a bit as well.

The lack of throttle response isn't an intake issue. It's probably more of a transmission issue. The car is heavy, doesn't have a ton of power, and only a 5 speed. So if you're anywhere out of the power band, it will feel "laggy". Nissan's actually have really instant throttle response from a stop. Try it sometime, when you accelerate from a light, notice that the instant you hit the gas, the car moves. Compare that to a lot of other cars like Lexus or especially BMW which are a bit laggy. But if you're going say 30mph, and you try to pass someone, that is where the car won't move. You're in the middle of 4th gear by then and the FX just doesn't have enough power. Try using the manual mode sometime, you'll notice that if you're in the power band the throttle response is fine. My other car is a 335i and it has terrible throttle response from a stop. The first inch of gas pedal does nothing. But it has a 6 spd. auto, 100+ more hp, and about 500 lbs less weight so when it's moving, the throttle response is amazing since I'm almost always in the powerband. Tiny changes in throttle while moving on that car result in changes in speed. Once the FX is moving, you can change the throttle a lot and nothing will happen.

An SRI will do nothing for throttle response. Some even say it hurts because you're sucking in hot engine air initially. I have a JWT intake w/ Z-tube and I couldn't tell a difference either way. It just sounds better. I did notice a difference in the plenum spacer though.

Okay. If I do the plenum spacer, does it make sense to go and get the ECU tuned? Also not sure what forum to ask this in, but does anyone know of a good tuning shop in the las vegas area?

Biggest bang for your bucks on tune is when all bolt performance mods (intake, plenum spacer, exhaust, transgo shift kit) are installed. Nothing wrong with tune it only with the plenum spacer installed.

+1 Andy...hey what about the UniChip...no love?? Plus it's inexpensive...mine is still sitting in the box waiting to be installed :-P

Hi ,
Do you know where I can do that in Vancouver or close by????
I m looking for weel spacer as well??
Please and thx

Osiris Rev-up seems to be the most common, and it has proven results.

JBaker, I mentioned that if he managed to get a deal on the intake and spacer then he could manage to do this for below 1600, including the tune.

More realistically OP should expect to pay about $2000 to make about an extra 30hp. Which is what he wants and it is about $1000 cheaper than he was willing to do. I would take that $1000 and buy some coilovers.

The Rev-up tune?

Monkey Nutz Racing is the place to do it in Vancouver, Juri is the man when it comes to the VQ engines.

As for wheel spacers buy a set of H&R's online, or hit up Image in motion in coquitlam and get them there. Just remember you need 5x114.3 w/ 66.1mm bore.

Not to say what has been said already, or repeat myself for the millionth time… the bolt ons do not do much and by the time you get "all" of them and a full tune to try and squeeze out a measly amount of hp, you'll already be in the ballpark of buying FI. Back on my FX35 by the time I had gotten most of the bolt-ons and the tune and the exhausts etc I hadn't even gotten everything and I could have just bought FI instead. Honestly, if your goals are just to make it louder and say "I have a few things done to it" by all means get the intake, plenum spacer, and exhaust. But that's all i would really recommend.

If you have more serious goals in mind, save your $3k and be on the lookout for used turbo/s/c systems for sale on the forums. I know there was a s/c sys for sale on here a while back for $3k. Look on Z and G forums, you're bound to find one.

i know we just sound annoying telling you to not mod, but we've all been there. I've been there with my FX35. don't make the same mistake haha

Good advise! I'm personally on the latter, I just want to sound modified! Haha.

It's not bad advice, but it should come with some warnings, for example, reliability risks.

As well people should be careful because unless you know what you are doing and you can do some work yourself you are going to spend way more than 3K (upwards of 5K) for a FI setup.

Yeah Force Induction is not a child's game. Sure you will get a lot of horsepower when you go turbo or SC, but you need to also consider rebuilding your engine, purchasing a methanol injection kit with at least a 5 gallon tank to keep your FI setup cool, upgrading your pulley system, etc. Getting a supercharger or turbo kit, alone is not enough, you are going to need to purchase/modify other things to prevent your motor from blowing up. I know this because my brother has a vortec supercharger on his G35, and he has spent 10K all together. Now when you add all that power, you think your stock tires are going to hold up, especially around corners or tight turns? He upgraded his tires to pilot sport cup 2, so he could keep the car on the road on turns. Those tires alone were $400 each.

Some of us here don't want to leave the house and get to the grocery store in 10 seconds. I am personally pleased with my set up, because I used quality parts on my MODS, performed the right tuning, and felt a huge difference in power. Anyone can check my garage and verify that. I am not against FI, but do not think you are only looking at 3-5k for the setup!!!

I think someone on the G35 forum posted on how much a "used" Vortech setup really costs. It was like $6500 or so by the time he was done. I considered forced induction on the FX but decided it just wasn't going to be worth it. $6-7K for maybe 350 whp if I don't want to build a motor. Then I'd have to worry about the tranny all the time and it still won't be all that fast. I've boosted N/A cars before and it's really not worth it. Old Maxima had a Stillen Vortech SC, $3K and it still only ran high 14's. Then wanted more power so built a custom turbo setup for $4K, then found out that the Stillen had been installed wrong which resulted in blown motor once we put the turbo on the dyno. Then replaced the motor - car made ~350whp and still only ran low 13's because of traction. Custom turbo'd the wife's Integra and it was fun, but the tranny didn't hold up and was slipping by the time we sold it. For the VQ, there aren't any cost effective mods N/A or boost. It's not an LS or something where there is a ton of gains. It's already tuned pretty well so most anything bolt on is just marginal. I'm currently at the standard intake/spacer/exhaust. Have HFC's sitting in a box and was going to get Uprev, but then thought about it and decided it wasn't worth it. Driving a loud slow car wasn't that appealing so I've decided to just enjoy it as a cruiser until I get a faster SUV. Get an intake and exhaust because you like the sound, not for gains. If you really want something fast, just buy something already boosted from the factory. Less worries and much cheaper to mod.

Good point, people will post completed projects but never update mistakes they encounter after the build. Longevity and reliability information are never posted as well as the cost of repairs and parts when something goes wrong. If you don't have the fund to commit to everything that has been stated previously, stick to the simply mods. Which is what I will be doing.
