I discovered a new airbox mod that seems to work!!

Hi everyone. I have discovered that the lower portion of the factory air box can be unclipped at the bottom rear portion of the air box, which gives the air filter access to colder air from underneath the car. I replaced all my upper air box pieces I removed and gave the new mod a shot and must say that is great. I believe my first mod reduced my horsepower due to pulling in hot engine bay air, but still gave a quick throttle response. The new mod seems to only pull cooler air and still by pass the bottle neck of the front air scoop, and my FX seems to have a quicker throttle response and more power. I will add pics when I remove the air box again, but the mod is simple: just use a flat head screw driver to pull back the holding tabs on the rear bottom portion on the air box and remove it. The filter still sits enclosed in the upper portion on the box. I guess the bottom section is a type of resonator that is attached to the air box. A cheap mod that works for the older FX45 for anyone interested.

I believe he is talking about all the extra pieces directly under the stock airbox. When I removed mine for the JW Pop Charger, I also took out all the extras below.

I'm imagining the "front box" (in front of the filter cartridge) and doesn't it go straight into the tube above the radiator? I can't picture a lower part.

On my air box it has a cup like piece that sits under the air filter element on the air box. When you remove it, it leave a square like hole in the box. You will have to remove the complete air assembly to get it out. If you use a mirror you could probably see it from the engine bay between the air box and engine.

No. The piece I am talking about in on the air box itself. It looks like a square like cup section that sits under air filter element. Your air box maybe different due to you having an 08 model.

The 35 has it too, it's a resonator. I saw on another forum where guys would take the resonator out and run a duct to it; not sure if that would be any better than just taking it out. I took it all out when I swapped to a JWT popcharger. I'm actually considering relocating the filter down there since there is a ridiculous amount of room with the resonator gone.

Not mean to hijack the thread. Since shadow mention of relocating the filter to down there. Here is what I had in 35. It's an Injen for M35 that I use.

Wow I had no idea you could get a intake that went deep down into there. I wanted to mod my Takeda by adding another piece to tuck it in there.

Only worry would be having it that low to the ground in rainy vancouver might hydrolock or get wet.

I have not seen another 35 with the injen and there were no threads on it. Most people recommended the stillen, but I hate the complicated and bulky stock airbox...

Check out Logan's wet sock to protect from water.

This must be it:

Thats it. Except that it is still attached to the air box on that picture and the setup is a little different than my air box setup besides the cone intake, but yes that cap like piece is it. On my air box the cap is positioned differently on the air box than on the FX35's air box, but close.

wouldn't that suck up hot air from the engine bay? even though its down and under? i dont recall there being any vents down there

No vents, but it's the closest to the bumper openings. And since heat rises, it should be slightly cooler. Short of a ram air setup, it's probably the best place to put a filter. Not that it matters much either way.

I was thinking about buying a pop charger, do they fix the FX45 without too much modifying?

It seems like a great spot to pick up cooler air away from the engine.

Pop charger does not need any modifying. It replaces the box and paper cartridge filter.
I have mixed options on it. It sucks a lot of engine heat so I don't run it during the summer heat. Some people have added a heat shield, but I'm not a fan of those. Check out the Manta Ray too.

Amsoil pre-filter works really well. I pulled into a garage after driving on the freeway in heavy Seattle rain and pulled it off, filter was bone dry. TBH I was surprised how dry the well area around the filter was in general.

wouldn't the stillen cai be the best since it uses the factory air intake duct to feed most of the air? with the stillen cai the air intake temp is around 5-8 degrees higher then the outisde temp
