2nd gen FX shopping in a few months.

I posted this in another Infiniti forum. But this one seems to be more active and has a much nicer overall design.

Next May I plan on buying a used FX. I'm looking to stay under 30K. I've been researching both the 35 and 50. Watching and reading anything I can find. Obviously the FX50 has more grunt and more standard features. While the FX35 is going to be a couple grand cheaper and get better MPG.

This is where my query gets a bit more personal though. The job I hope to get will require driving around town to different retail stores throughout the day. Does the FX50 really do that bad with city MPG compared to the FX35?

To the FX50 owners, do you ever feel like you can't really let the car rip for fear of bad MPG? That just doesn't seem like much fun to me.

I also plan on buying a small camping trailer in a couple years. Why did they lower the FX35s towing capacity to 2000# when it was 3500# just the year before?

And lastly, the nearest FX50 for less than $30K is more than 800 miles away from me. While there are more than a dozen FX35s at that price within 500 miles.

Thanks so much in advanced.

Point #1 - Yes the 50 will get absolutely horrific gas mileage everywhere, but the isn't 35 too great either. Honestly both the VQ and VK engines are brutal. Infiniti just doesnt seem to place too big of an emphasis on fuel economy (neglecting their recent hybrid models and the terrible failure that was the G25).

Point #2 - You will find it much harder to find a 50 if you are picky about pricing, colour combination, etc. The 50 is simply put a much rarer commodity. I think for every 9 35's that are sold, only one 50 model is sold. So that gives you an idea of the market you are stepping into.

Point #3 - With all that said, I have driven both cars for extended periods (previously worked at a dealership), and the 50 is striking. I mean the power and fun is phenomenal. So if you can swing it, get the 50, especially if you are a car guy. --Theres no replacement for displacement--

i would take a trip down somewhere where they have both 35/50. Test drive them both and see which one puts a smile on your face. Personally i would get the FX50.

If I'm only going to lose a mile or so to the gallon with the FX50 in the city then I will definitely go out of my way to get it.
You are right with the color combos. I love the java and chestnut interiors and I feel like I'm going to have a hard time find those in an FX50 in my price range.

I've owned two 1st Gen FX35's, an 06 & 08 and now the 09 FX50. My experience hasn't been much different on gas mileage between the two in my opinion. Not sure what the specs are supposed to be between the 1st and 2nd Gens but I put about 70-80 dollars of gas in the 50 every 5 days. I spent maybe 10 dollars less respectively with the 1st Gens so not much difference. That's considering I always use 93 octane with gas prices between $3.80-$4.05 a gallon here. The FX is my daily driver and I drive about 20-30 mins to work 5 days a week. All that is just taking into consideration my driving back and forth to work, not my driving on my days off. If I run a lot of errands on the weekend, I end up gassing up sooner than usual.

Then again I really have a lead foot so obviously I'm probably burning gas a little faster than the average person.

I got excited when I saw the title of that video. Anybody here grab that whip?

Will you be compensated for the miles traveled for work?

Yes, but I have no idea to what extent. It's all going to be in city though, all within the same 10 mile radius or so.

I find out tomorrow if I got the job and if I didn't than I can pretty much flush my new car plan.

Not sure if my insurance company would like me having a supercharger. Hell of a car though. haha.

I live in Michigan and I flew to Tennessee to pickup my fX50S. I was very very very picky. I was patient and waited all over the US for it to show up and then it did and couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Luckily the color choice I probably would have chosen (besides black/black) was the one I got.

Maybe you should buy mine ;) haha

Black on Black is always classy. But I'd like a color scheme that you just wouldn't be able to get on a non-premium car.
And I think I'll pass on your car, even though you are only 2000 miles away from me.

When I kicked up my price range by a couple thousand I saw there are a few FX50s for sale within 500 miles of me. One of which is a Black/Java. So I guess I'll just keep an eye on those for a while. Although I highly doubt they'll still be there by the time I have my down payment saved up.

Coming from someone that has had 2 fx35 - the last being a 2012 LE that was traded for a 2013 fx50s that had 4k on it- there is no comparison. The mileage in the 35 was horrible- I was always in it. The 50 is a little worse but u don't push that at all compared to the 35. I also feel the 50 is a more solid ride. There are also base 50s that don't come with the sport package that pre owned with low mileage are definitely attainable. I deal solely with Lia Infiniti in upstate New York that have a wish list program for buyers. Let your Infiniti dealership know what you want - they will get it for you.
