Engine Won't Start

Hi,

Today I tried starting my FX50 (09) and it just didn't start. I checked the battery, even charged it, and it doesn't seem to be a battery issue. When I press on the "ON" button to start the engine and press the brake, everything turns on, then there's a clicking noise, and the engine doesn't start up. The issue is that the engine doesn't even attempt to fire up! It seems like it might either be an electrical issue getting to the engine startup or maybe the spark plugs. Tomorrow I'll have to call a towing company and have the FX50 towed to the dealer. Guys, any help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 
Put a fresh battery in if you have one available and try again. Most likely the cause. It takes a lot to turn that engine over
 
For what it's worth: Just so happens today I was listening to my stereo as I was cleaning my ride and after around an hour the music just cut out. When I went to start it the car made the clicking sound you described above. I charged my battery and it started right back up...I'd guess it's your battery.

99% sure it's the battery.

Our cars require a ton of battery juice and there it won't turn over unless everything passes in the electrical that it is enough juice. Even when our cars might start with enough juice, if it's at its minimal the electricals won't allow it to pass.

Once I was having my tint put on 2 years ago and the guy kept raising and lowering the window, doors open etc. The battery did the same exact thing. Our cars drain battery like you have no idea and if you don't have an awesome battery then you will have issues like this later. OEM batteries are not the best.

I would not tow to the dealer...that will be expensive and then they will charge you an arm and a leg for a battery that isn't the greatest either. Get yourself a great battery, install it, and you'll be good. If you charged up your battery that doesn't make any difference. Does your battery pass the load test and other tests that the electrical system verifies before it allows the engine to turn? Probably not.

Which load test are you talking about? Is this the one the vehicle performs itself? How would I know if it did or didn't? :(

Happened to me recently. Definitely replace the battery as you'll have this issue again and again. I replaced it with a "middle of the road" one from the shop.

Great! Definitely get a new one now. It's just a matter of time before you have the same exact situation. Once you let a battery go dead then it gets much worse. I think our batteries are 775 or something crank. Anyway, look on the battery and there should be a crank rating and cold crank rating. Go to autozone or whatever and make sure you get one that is at least or I suggest higher...it will last longer and easier on your car. Some of the optimum ones go even higher and say last longer.

When I replace batteries for my wife or myself I always go a tad higher based on what OEM specs have. "mid of the road" is a relative term. For example a coupe might need 600 crank while our FX needs 775 lets just say. 850 for our FX is perfect in my opinion while for a coupe would be overkill. I've seen autozone try to sell slightly less than what OEM is and I'd be weary of that. Those guys will try to sell you everything. Unfortunately you have to do your own research and know what you are buying.
 
JD is right on. Make sure the Cold cranking amps and cranking amps are the same or higher than oem. I had this issue in the M5 a week ago. One startup was fine, by the time I filled up it was dead. Again especially in a 50 it takes a lot of power to turn the engine over and if the electronics don't sence the minimum it won't start. I went ahead and bought one from Les schwab. 3 years warranty on full replacement and 7 years prorated.
 
As batteries get older, they wont hold a charge. So as everyone says, definitely get new battery. Dont let it get it get so bad you cant even jump it. Had that happen last year and it was annoying to replace a battery in a dark parking garage.

Lucky for me a lil push and 2nd gear did the trick....
 
Thanks once again guys. I'll look into it - I don't have AutoZone here in Quebec. But after doing my research it will either be Optima or Kirkland...

If you get an Optima, make sure to go with the yellow top. Their red top batteries do not do well with deep discharges which happens in both very cold or very hot climates. The yellow top that will fit is model 8040-218 D35.

I just replaced my battery last winter, I went with an Interstate Mega-Tron Plus 24F battery. Thirty month free replacement, 6 year performance with 800 CCA and almost $100 cheaper than the Optima.

Your description does, indeed, sound like a dead battery. Just a tip when you go to replace it; your back will thank you if you do so with some type of step stool. It is just in an awkward place to reach.
