Air bag light experience

2006 FX with 80,000 miles air bag light came on. Tried the reset procedure, but light will come back on in a few days. Took it to Nissan shows code B1049 "Driver air bag module open." They use a flow chart to determine their actions.

1. Visually check harness 2. Replace harness if it has visual damage. 3. Replace driver air bag module. 4. Replace the spiral cable. 5. Replace the diagnosis senor. 6. Replace the related harness. Pretty dumb flow chart. Basically, if they can't see any damages they will just replace it.
Air bag module cost $1000. The service guy told me to skip 3 and go to 4 "spiral cable" which is $500.

Under the warranties, do air bags fall under seat belts? It not, where?

I am unable to locate the code B1049 anywhere, in fact this is the first time I see a code starts with the letter B.

Your reference is the SRS section as la_fx35 mentioned, although it does not list such code (neither other sections), but it lists the procedure you mentioned above. But definitely here is where one should look given your problem.

I have been through this section, finding what the problem is seems to be pretty easy even without consult II, there is a user mode which is tells you what is your problem, and then a diagnostic mode which helps you further understand the cause and fix it.

User mode is the the normal starting and driving mode, basically after you switch your car on, observe the blinking pattern of the airbag warning light, there are 4 cases - we can start this if you wish:

1) After ignition, warning light turns on for 7 seconds then it goes off
2) After ignition, warning light turns on for 7 seconds then it goes off, and then it starts blinking
3) After ignition, warning light turns on and stays on
4) After ignition, nothing happens and there is no warning light.

Which one is your case?

Forgot to mention, # 1 is "no problem", what I think your case is # 3, waiting for your confirmation.

Thank you for your assistance.

2. Sometimes
3. After Ignition, warning light turns on and begins to blink. (Most Common)
Sometimes the blinking light is slower.

Case # 2 is a system malfunction, but it is not a deployment problem (airbag or seat belt pre-tensioner)

Since it is blinking, then going into diagnostic mode with the ignition switch is possible, here is what you have to do to go in and later out:

Once you are in diagnostic mode, you need to check the warning light flash pattern once again and compare it to the 13 charts in SRS section on pages 30 through 33.

If you could do that then let us know which one is a perfect match.

i believe airbag does not fall under seatbelts. if you have extended warranty have your local dealer check it for you. With this code drive airbag is the one on your steering wheel. i would replace the spiral cable (known as clock spring), dont skip this.

skip airbag module, harness etc.

For the first statement you made - regardless of the subject of this topic, here is a quote from the manual just FYI:

The seat belt pre-tensioner system with load limiter is installed for both the driver's seat and the front passenger's seat. It operates simultaneously with the SRS air bag system in the event of a frontal collision with an impact exceeding a specified level

For the second statement, it is really unwise to start buying and replacing and spending money without having a closure and done a minimum homework. if we just get a perfect match then fxrider will know what to replace.

i dont know if read it right on the original post Under warranties, if the airgbag fall on the seatbelts. correct me if im wrong, i know seatbelts are lifetime warranty but not air bag.

the reason i told him to go ahead and replace the spiral cable , is that i've seen lot of those codes came to our dealership and ended up being the spiral cable.

That is correct, assuming the wiring harness connection is sound and physically fit.

If you have noticed, the chart matching your case does tell you to replace the spiral cable first and if it did not work then replace the air bag module, unlike what the dealer told you.
