my engine has been knocking for about a month now... I got em checked out at a local friends shop but he din know what it was now my choice is to 1) just drive it until it dies. 2) trade it in while its still running , 3) rebuild or swap " shit I jsut dropped my net book and my enter button is not functioning.... sorry well what do you guys think

I have a 05 45 with 77k mile
The car still runs flawless minus the knock ...... It bothers me so much that i have the music on all the time ....

What would be the cost for engine swap or rebuild ....

And if i were to rebuild any shops in nyc? That can do a solid job? What would be the down time?

How long will an engine last with the knocking sound? Ex 10kmore ? 100k more?

Would the dealers take a car in for a trade? Even with a knock? If so what would be diminished for that reason?

Really be nice to know exactly what the knock is. How loud, how pronounced is it? I would suggest to exhuast additive options immediately. I'd run two applications of RX with oil changes.

Engine replacement will be costly, rebuild will not be cheap either. If you intend to keep the car for a long while and the knock is truly a bad issue you can follow through with the replacement or rebuild. If are having any thoughts of upgrading I'd beat the sound down and trade it in.

I wouldn't drive it if I were you. The knocking bothered me to the point where it was stressing me out. Dump the car and go stress free!

Yes i have a low rpm knock similar to that of mongolians..... Its emitting from the bottom of the engine .....
From the hood of the car the sound is not that moticeable...

Its when your inside the cabin with windows up you hear it the most !!!

Sucks that my flawless 45 is doing this .... I just got new tires too and new lifetime alignment at firestone TT

Drive is still flawless no noticeable vibrations or rattles .... No engine idling problems etc

So what would they give me on my trade in ? If they do take it ? I know it depends but just curious ....

Again, if you are going to keep it that's one plan, if you are going to trade it in that is another. If it is a mechanical issue there is nothing you can do, it MAY be something less. Regardless I'd do my best to minimize the knock ASAP whether you keep it or trade it in you want to reduce the damage/sound as much as possible. I do agree with Mongolian, I would try not to drive it if you can.

The main reason i suggest running additives as a last option is personal experience (and it is cheap compared to shop time) My GS400 had sludging issues and developed some mechanical sounds, I ran two consecutive apps of RX and it went away, in fact I swear the car ran better and was faster. I am not suggesting a miracle cure just a last ditch effort.

When you say RX do you mean like lucas additive? I done that but still the sound was the same

Is there any brand you recommend?
Can you let me know which one?

This is the additive/cleaner - http://www.auto-rx.com/ I'm not saying that I believe it will for sure fix your issue but it definitely worked in my situation.

It sucks to be in your situation man, I feel for you. I know exactly what the costs are for both rebuilding and replacing a VK45, amazing engine but limited production numbers make it more expensive.

Thnx again i guess this is online stuff
Autozone wouldnt have this ? I feellike buying it right now damn

I get it, I over nighted my first container I was so panicked. Have you considered consulting another shop that deals primarily in Nissan's or knows Infiniti's well that can help deduce possibly what the knock is? The sound obviously isn't a good sign but fact that it runs (and you said well, no vibrations?) is promising. I would say take it to a dealer where they might have come across the same issue but I suspect you don't want to narrow your trade-in opportunities.

Yea i am trying to stay away from dealers and also focus on local shops but really hard to find a real good one here in nyc most shops are installers ....
They are good at installing but not a real solid technicians ...

I will try your method first
See where it leads and if anything i will
Trade it or something

Damn when i have music on i forget i have a knock ....
Thats how well its still running ....
No visible mileage loss either still doing like 19-20 on hway and 14 as usual mixed driving...

No exhaust fumes either what the hell

Just care too much for the car to jave such an issue !!!!

Thx logan so have you changed your engine? Or rebuild?

What happened to your knocking issues? If you had one...

I've been fortunate to have good mechanics at Infiniti and also friends that are part time mechanics (cough Handy_Andy), so in my situation I would get cost estimates and get it fixed most likely.

If you don't have someone you can trust to fix it, you could end up spending more than what the cars worth. So my take is if you don't have a mechanic you can trust, trade it in while you can and let the dealership deal with it.

Really, I'm a trusty part time mechanics? Thanks Ed. I've always thought of myself as a bit more mechanically inclined and a little more hands-on car enthusiast.

Thanks guys, but that engine is way above my head! Gotta leave it with a good seasoned professional.
