Infiniti Steer By Wire

Interesting. Very good concept. Hope it will materialize soon. No more play around with that 22 mm bolt on the rack-n-pinion to rid of the steering wheel shakes . Then just a few more electronic components/actuators to worry about.

This sounds like a great idea in theory, but i hope it performs well in real world conditions. Meaning i hope you dont feel disconnected from the road/wheels. Every time a manufactures wants to be an idustry leader in technology i dont want to be their guinea pig.

I'm sure this will be good for weight savings too since there is no mechanical steering parts.

Nope. It will likely result in more weight. Its to eliminate the parasitic drag of the ps pump from the motor...

...The system consists of multiple components, including a steering force actuator, multiple electronic control units (ECUs), a steering angle actuator and a clutch to provide an emergency mechanical linkage between steering wheel and tires. There’s also a camera and processing module, which helps the system deliver better straight line control.

If implemented right, it could offer more stable handling without the twitching caused by road imperfections. This of course would really depend on the software for the steering.

Weight savings might not be had, as a mechanical steering linkage still exists for fallback operation.
