In the market for a backup camera and screen... been searching on amazon but havn't found one with superb day/night quality.

Was wondering if IS had any recommendations on aftermarket backup cameras + screens? :good:

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm that looks great in your pictures.

The amazon listing shows a backup camera that looks like this:

Do you know if that is the same one you have? Looks like some minor differences (mounting bracket). Thanks again!

Cool. I may look deeper to see if i can find the one with your mounting bracket since it looks like you can change the angle of the camera. The picture above, looks like the camera is fixed onto the bracket?

Additionally did you tap into the reverse lights so that the camera only turns on when the lights turn on?

Yes, I did tap it to my reverse light positive wire, or you can find a reverse switch wire and connect the camera. It doesn't really matter.

Hi guys, my 2005 FX35 doesn't have the tech package: no backup camera nor GPS :(

I've looked through the forum and I saw some really nice integration of an additional screen, which reminded me of how DIY home projectors are made: a LCD screen is transparent when off. Thus it should be possible to buy a GPS having a backup camera; dismount the GPS, hide the electronic inside the console/dash, and somehow fix the GPS LCD + front bezel over the orange LCD screen.

That sounds a bit crazy, but still easier than altering the dash and console to add a new LCD screen space. And the GPS and rear camera would be displayed on top of the orange screen when switched ON. When the GPS is active, the orange LCD should be a bit visible through it. The catch is to be able to switch on the gps either when a button is pushed or when the rear gear is selected.

Still just a thought, I've just started thinking on this kind of installation. Has anyone already tried that?

Have you considered integrated license plate frame back up cam with parking sensors?

This one is the more expensive variety. There are a few which are below $100. I can't vouch for them though quality wise but I've seen it sold on retail at Speedworld in Queens Blvd. It looks nice especially the all black frames.

Sounds interesting, keep us posted if u give it a try.
I'm still thinking about it. When the GPS screen is off, it should be 50% transparent at least, so we should be able to read the original orange LCD easily. When the GPS map is on, I'm not sure I'd be able to read the audio/clim information anymore, due to the map on top and due to the GPS screen backlight directly over the orange screen (maybe setting the orange LCD brightness to max would do the trick).

I'd love to automaticly switch on the gps screen when puting the gear box in reverse, but I'm not sure how to do that : ideally the GPS should switch on either when the car is in reverse or when I press a button. I'll have to look at that some more before buying a rear-camera+GPS kit.

I've put my 6" gps over the screen to check if it could get GPS signal, and it did work so that should not be an issue.

Maybe I'll dismount my current 6" GPS for a first try, and then I'll get the rear-camera+GPS kit? To check if the electronic board can be put further away and if the orange LCD will be visible through the GPS.

That would ensure the viability of this solution.

that won't work, an lcd assy is not transparent when off. even if you removed the rear blocking reflective layer you would essentially kill much of the backlight and still not be able to see through the lcd because of all the diffuser layers still in the lcd stack. if you removed those completely then you would really have no backlight at that point and you still won't be able to see through it enough anyway. hate to say it but it's not going to work at all the way your thinking...

Hmm IIRC you're right... which is even better! That means the GPS screen will have to be always ON: either displaying a white or light gray background WinCE desktop picture to see the orange LCD through, or displaying the rear camera or the GPS. That could actually simplify the idea.

Yes the antiglare surface is to be removed or we won't be able to read the orange LCD:

And here's the result some dude got 10 years ago: his LCD gives a nice sharp image through its transparency (the Allinbox screen is from the monitor behind):
