Quad Projectors Possible?

So I've been staring at a spare set of headlights I have sitting here and debating what I want to have done with them before I drop them off at the shop. Initially I was just going to get the usual AE and TSX-R lense put in. But the more I've been thinking about it, and the more I look at G's w/ quad projectors, I wonder if I should attempt this. One of the future plans for the car is one of rookie's front bumpers, so that would take away the OEM fogs I believe. So I was thinking about putting a projector foglight where the DTRL currently is.

I know that turbo did something similar back in the day, but due to space constraints it's not a true quad projector and only looks the part. Is there any reason one of the smaller projector retrofits out there wouldn't fit in the DTRL spot? Obviously a decent amount of custom fabrication is required, but would it fit? Some of those new kits I see are very compact and if my rough size estimates are correct, they should fit. I know it's not going to be a cheap project, but if I'm already going to drop a decent amount of money just having the shop open the lights and adding AE, why not spend a little more and go all the way?

I think the only issue turbo ran into was not being able to fit the leveling mechanism into the housing without modifying the radiator supports. The additional two projectors would be in a fixed position and use a smaller bulb.

No, I'm pretty sure turbo did got the true quad projector in with some cutting of the radiator support.

I wouldn't worry about the levelling mechanism. I haven't touched the OEM levelling system since shortly after I bought the car. I'd just aim the projectors to function as fogs and leave it. Thanks for the info, this is much more promising now.

to do the dual quads and have them contained within the stock headlight housing then yeah, you do not have enough depth there to set up a "true" projector that is really focused properly. the headlights I built for several others are just dummy projectors, they look the part and they do throw some light of course but do not actually double the light output. I did build a set for myself though that are true dual projectors and do really double the light output. it involved grafting 2 headlight housings together and also cutting the rad support for it to then fit... this added space was not so much for the leveling as it was for the projector depth needed.

the only way you can add a projector to the inner part and still have enough depth for a focused projector without modifying the headlight housing would be to use smaller projector(s) IE; you don't have enough depth for a full 2" projector but you should have plenty of depth for a 1" projector which should require much less depth... you may be able to add more than one to that inner area... the creativity and actual design would be up to you, just throwing some food for thought out there for you... maybe you can add a set of smaller projector fogs in that area... there are a lot of possibilities I guess, but to have dual true OE 2" projectors you will need to extend the headlight housing quite a bit... I'll try to find some pics of how I did mine...

I found a few pics for you... this is how much extra room you need for a real dual projector setup...

and here is a few installed in the car...

Thanks for putting all the pics together. They really reminds me that I have a couple set of headlights open up seating in my basement waiting (2 years) to be work on.

Thanks for all the detail. Any idea on roughly how much depth there is to work with before needing to extend the back housing?

best way to gauge this would be to remove the bulb holder in the dtrl and stick something in there to measure depth.... if I had to guess I'd say you have maybe 4"-5" or so to work with

man,.. a mod from the past. can never get tired of looking at turbocad photos...

Just did some measuring last night, it's about ~5.5" from the housing to the lens there. It should be enough room to get one of the smaller projectors in there especially since I'm not going to need the OEM levelling stuff for that one. I may have to open the back up a little bit for clearance, but it looks like it will work without having to modify the support. I'll open the lights up this week and start ordering parts.

So it looks like it will work without having to open up the back. I've started notching the trim piece to clear the projector mounting tabs. I'm going to replace the OEM shroud w/ an aftermarket one as well. Plan is to cut off the face of the OEM shroud and mold the front of an aftermarket shroud in. I just measured and the shrouds line up, so that won't be too bad. Have to figure out what to use to prevent light leakage from the aftermarket projector. Final step will be replacing the turn signal lense with a clear projector lens and installing a matching shroud. So it will be functional quad projectors but have the look of hexa? projectors.

i got mine going. I drove around with it. somehow the cutoffs were messed up and i saw 4 different cutoffs. was very annoying. i ended up fixing cause the glue i used didn;t hold up to the head too well. gonan try put it back on tomorrow and test it

Will do. Tonight is when I pass the point of no return and cut up the factory bezel.

Viperi, looks great. I was going to do the AE but decided to go for a different look. The shrouds I got are slotted for light to pass through so I'm going to put the rings inside the shroud. Nothing will be seen on the outside until they light up. Are you running 2 sets of OEM projectors? Or did you build a dummy projector?
Nice, the pics coming so we all can follow your progress :smile (2):
