smoking out tail lights

Has anybody been able to successfully smoke out the tail lights using film? or is it recommended having them painted? Does anybody know of any good shops in the So. California area?
Thanks

due to the odd shape of FXs most people would recommend you get it professionally painted by a shop,
the VHT is really easy to mess up on if not done correctly, and the film are also very good if you can get them on without any bubbles

I had mine done at Custom Auto Body in San Diego. They have done almost everything on my FX.

looks real nice!!
how much did u pay for it? I dont want to go too dark, just a subtle difference for the tails and a light shade for the front.

$240 total (60 per light). They can do anything from black to clear. Mine look darker in the shade. You can see the insides of the housings in sunlight.

cool, ill have to check them out next time in in the area. just want to keep my mods simple with some minor changes. I think smoking the lights is rather inexpensive and make a big difference in the look especially white cars.

Get them sprayed. I used tint film on mine and they aren't perfect because of the damn curves. :(
You can see the creases up close, but once you're past 6 feet from the car it looks good.
I only have creases on the outer tail lights. Inners and reflectors are perfect.

Here is a pic of the outer tail light up close, I have less creases than this now:
