Hi everyone - My wifes 05 FX35 is making a VERY loud ( almost like a quick-burst mini train horn ) noise coming from the front passenger side. It doe'nt happen all the time, but i finally heard it for the first time today. I know it's hard to picture it unless you've had it happen to you. Not sure if it's a common problem with this year fx or not. I did go under-neath and could not see anything unusual. Any ideas or thoughts ? Thanks

Yes more info is needed..does it happen only once per drive, volume decrease with each occurrence, warm vs cold etc..

Sorry... It happens once in awhile when driving. It is very awakening when it happens LOL. If it is a bearing /hub, can u ride for a little (couple days , til the weekend) on it before addressing the problem ? Can these be purchased at Napa ?

If it's a bearing, you can drive with it as long as you'd like. It's not hurting anything, but just sounds terrible.

Thanks guys! I just don't want it to freeze up on the wife over the next couple days until we can fix it. It might make a noticeable noise 1 or 2 times on a good drive.

Is this a pretty straight forward DIY project or is there anything to be aware of ? Does the spacer ring come with the bearing hub or purchased seperatly? Thanks

I highly doubt its the bearing. Especially if it happens from time to time. I haven't had a bad bearing on my FX but i have on my explorere and my honda accord, but i'm fairly sure that most bearings sound similar when they go bad. A bad bearing sounds like a rubbing noise kind of and once it's bad the noise is always there. You said it sounds like a horn. just giving my two cents before you go and buy a hub and it's not the problem

Hmmm, now I'm stumped... It's just been happening on occasion and it very noticable when it does happens.Don't know how to decribe it , but a loud short bursting noise

True, bad bearing will make a constant rubbing noise or whirling noise, but when it just starting to get bad, that's when it comes and goes. This noise will eventually becomes constant.

Carl, I would wait a little longer to see if the noise become more frequent before committing to replace the hub bearing. As for the "spacer ring" you mentioned. Not sure which part you're referring to. Did you mean the wheel spacer?

does this happen when braking while going over a bump or rough road?
then it may be the brake booster/master cylinder. .... this happens with my car like
a spring is going off from the driver front side ...

when i took mine in they said my master cylinder
is bad... now i am just waiting for the right time....

Looks like i'll wait a lil longer to see what happens. When i was driving, tried swerving the car back and forth to create the sound and nothing. Later in the day, going back to the house , i slowed down ( no brakes ) going into the median ( 15-20MPH) it went off and it sounded like it came from the passenger side wheel area.

sounds like something might be binding

another thing you can do is switch that tire to the other side, see if it follows

Without seeing the car:
1) Bad wheel bearing.
2) Maybe the heat shield got pinched and bent so when you make certain turns it hits it and makes that sound? I forget if the front's have heat shields or not since I removed/cut mine for my bbk.

I have the same problem as the OP. Mine has been going on for at least 8 months. Sometimes the noise is embarrassing and then at times, you hear nothing. I tried the 12PM/6PM tire shake test and nothing moved. I tried the lift car off the floor and spin the wheel test. I do hear light grinding noise but to confuse me even more, i hear the same noise on the side that does not make the initial noise. I think i am just going to buy the front hub and perform the posted DIY steps.
