So in 2008 i had an Audi a6 and often traveled from Jersey to va on the weekends. At the time gas prices were ballooning 4$+, I was very upset to have to spend that much for gas. The alternative at the time was the prius . That is a rolling cock blocker and I wasn't gonna do that to myself.

Fast forward to 2012 tge gas prices have returned to 4$ . So i have scheduled an appt in April to go take a look at the tesla model s .
And if I'm given news I wanna hear then I'm gonna put a deposit and wait for my all electric car! I'm not gonna. Pay high gas prices because of speculation, or any of the middle east conflicts

Are you getting the largest battery? Performance model?

I've actually seen their prototypes in person, and they look nice. Fit and finish was a little off, but I put that on being a prototype. Lots of room in the trunk too!

R2D2, have you done a comparison between gasoline and electricity in terms of $/mile? If your disinterest in paying for gas is rooted in a matter of principle then the price doesn't matter, but if your plan is to save money on "fuel", you may be surprised by the results...

I thought it is cheaper based on charging at off-peak hours overnight?

It depends on the area specific rates as well. My point was that most people think of electric cars as being uber cheap to drive when in fact they're about as economical as a VW Golf with an inflated price tag, <100 mile range (<50 in most cases.) and a 10 hour charge time. The real benefit lies in their lack of emissions and the fact that the electricity used to charge them *can* be generated using sustainable practices, even though the reality is that coal is burned to make most of it... but i digress. The advantage is their lack of emissions.

Yeah I want to say gas is 13 cents a mile, and electric was 8 cents? These are just numbers popping out of my head though.

Model S can go up to 300 miles on a charge with the 85 kWh battery, with about 60 miles in an hour charge time.

Gas $/mile depends entirely on the vehicle, and electricity rates vary widely by location. You would have to analyze a specific EV and use your area-specific gas/electric rates.

I'll check my elec bill when i get home, but 5kWh for 300 miles is pretty good. Much better than any other EV I've seen. The Volt needs something like 4kWh for 40miles iirc...

Ok, I just crunched some numbahs. Using these assumptions:
.
1) Electricity in NJ right now is $0.1187/kWh (current default rate from PSE&G)
.
2) Tesla Model S can achieve 300 mile range with an 85kWh battery option (mfg's claimed maximum)
.
3) Gasoline in NJ is $4.00/gal
.
.
The model S can achieve the equivalent of 100mpg. Pretty awesome for a 7 seater with a ~5 sec 0-60 time, that DOESN'T look like a jelly bean.

Look at the cost of ownership though. How much will the battery cost in years or so when its toast? A Prius battery costs an outrageous amount. I never understood how they are more environmentally friendly considering the issues of disposing of that battery.

I have looked into the Model S, I even went to check out one of the prototypes. I love the look, all of the technology in the car and especially NO MORE GAS. As far as the cost savings, you can take a look at this website and make your own comparison http://www.befrugal.com/tools/electric-car-calculator/. The battery can cost about $40,000 to replace and there have been some reports that some of the roadster models have had some issues with bricking if the battery becomes completely depleted. Tesla has stated that the Model S battery has been redesigned so that owners would have to be "particularly negligent" to cause a battery replacement. I am personally going to wait a few years to see how they hold up before I pull the trigger. Let us know what you think after you take a look.

I'd buy one. Handling is amazing too because low center of gravity, it's like a skate board. Engine is below you so front engine bay is a "trunk" too.

In case you want to see what a bare bones roadster looks like:

Roadster battery is $40k, but I assume the Model S is cheaper, since the MSRP is much lower. Also, battery warranty is 8 years, and from 100,000 to infinite miles depending on what size battery.
