The infamous brake squeak in reverse

Hi all. 05 FX35, 59K Miles.

I know the brakes are a common issue with these cars. Squeaks in reverse. The pads were around 50-60% left.

I just replaced the rear brake pads with Wagoner ThermoQuiet.

And you guess it...still squeaks. I heard it was because the OEM pad/rotors. I was hoping replacing the pads with a Non-OEM would cure it. No Dice!

Any thoughts?

I did use brake quiet too. I have replaced at least 75 brake pads in my life and have never come across anything like this.

i only replaced the rears thinking that is where the noise is coming from. Anyone experience it comin from the front or is the rear where the problem is?

front- stock pads always squicked when coming to a stop, rears i never replaced my rotors i always use stock pads and disc brake quiet and time to time sound comes back. I replaced my front brake pads to hawk hps and i properly bed in my pads and their is virtually no sound. You can always buy the new hardware kit for the rears and test em out but heard from few people sounds come back. I would recommend new quality rotors to stop any break related sounds.

Would the Stoptech slotted front and rear rotors and Hawk HPS pads front and rear completely eliminate brake squeal and improve braking over stock FX50S? My squeals are getting worse.

I had this issue as well. I did an on car rotor turn and replaced the pads and the backing plates with the new style backing plates that have an extra anti squeel tab on them. I used to use brake quiet on backs of pads and backing plates however a master mechanic freind of mine recomended a high temp silecone grease instead. Brake quiet can wear off with time and the greases will last longer. This was three years ago and still no squeel with OE pads and rotorts.

Backing Plates (Hardware Kits Used)

The rear pads I bought came with the hardware kit, which I used. Visually they look the same as what you show but there can always be slight differences. I guess it depends on what the Non-OEM company used as a template.

For the brake quiet, I actually use a graphite base lube that my old Honda dealership used. One of the techs hooked me up a tub of it and have been using it ever since. Worked great in all the cars I used it for (Mustangs, Toyotas, Nissans, and of course my past two Infiniti's).

Mine is a 2nd gen and they squeak and make all kinds of popping and clicking noises from the brakes. I'm already down on the wear metal on the front. When I drive they grind. Need to get those changed out soon.

Most pads these days are performance driven and give up sound for braking -- hence most need to be warmed up to avoid the squeal.

Glaze on pads and rotors can do this too -- I bed my brakes if this happens to burn off the glaze.

Jd- i actually would recommend hawk hps pads for your fronts only, rear oe pads. Ive noticed my car works better this way, hawks dont have a good cold bite, the rears make up for it though. Im actually going to make a review on the latest hawk hps pads. Hawk actually reduced the bite power, now it feels more spongy; but it will stop the car better than oe pads.

On another note mtn fx is right the disk brake quiet does not last. Hawk supplies high temp grease which works much much better

I can understand if the car started off quiet and I went to a performance pad. I used to work at a shop that built race Mustangs. It was a trade off, better braking more noise.

I am trying to identify and fix an inherent problem with the FX. Being that it is 2012, I would have assumed a fix has been found otherwise Infiniti would have people screaming at them. My car new was $45K (glad I bought it used :wink (2): ). I would have been at the dealership everyday complaining if I spent that much and it made this noise.

is it the pads, the rotors, or both that make the squealing? Should I stick with OEM rotors or get the stop tech ones I mentioned? I'm looking to not reduce any performance or feel of the current setup because I really love how the FX50 brakes feel and work, but would enjoy reducing the squeel. I don't want to really get in the habit of bedding in brakes every 2 months or whatever since I'm sure then I will go through brakes faster. I'm at 52k miles with original brakes and they are just now starting to squeel more.

Ive spoke to many 20+ years experienced technicians and/or mechanics and they all said nissan/infiniti always had shitty brake systems. This was something they all agreed on. One from Miller Infiniti in Los Angeles, second Glendale Infiniti tech, 3rd Nissan/ Infiniti non dealer service center.. and i wasnt there for brake job or anything related, so they werent making up stories.

Yeah but I would assume the FX50 brake system is made by akebono not Nissan.

no bedding every 2 months with the hawks. If you use the grease behind the pads, and bed in once your good to go.
Pads usually will cause squicky sounds, grinding and etc. You can use aftermarket rotors if you like, but ive used two sets of hawk pads on my oe rotors and the 1st set ; did not properly bed in and it made horrible sounds. But they were overall better than the current or newly hawk hps. The recent ones have no sound.

yes jd, i guess he was referring to the non brembo and akebono ones

ive tried everything mentioned above to remedy this squeal in reverse. i replaced pads twice, rotors twice, and just got finished installing the hardware kit.

this is one of the worst experiences ive had with a car, and ive owned about 15 nissans.

is there anything else i should try before i lose my damn mind?

To update, I had both my front and rear pads warrantied through O'Reilley. Turned the front rotors. Replaced all the clips for a third time. Lubed the hell out of the pad contact places as well as the caliper contact. And I am extremely happy to report that the brake squeal is GONE!!!
