Grom Audio unit install HELP!!

Gents, need some tech help, hope one of you can help me with this :smile (2):

I purchased the Grom Audio USB-2 kit from their site, to put on my 04 fx35 awd w/ bose speakers system.
I've followed the install instructions almost to its entirety and i'm having an issue where the apparatus works and is turned on but all i hear is heavy static and loud whine with the music playing at very low volume in the background..

to backtrack: i've made sure there's no xm satellite receiver attached to the harness going to the spare tire area behind the plastics, i've installed the supplied harness properly (it only fits the one plug so i can't really mess that one up) and i even installed their new firmware as instructed on their site..

where i believe the problem is, is that i connected the grom unit power wire to possibly the wrong power wire/12v constant going to the headunit... in the instructions it mentions that the 12v constant should be a yellow or purple wire but doing some research i found that on this site modifiedlife . com/car-stereo-radio-wiring-diagram-2004-infiniti-fx35/ the 12v constant is a white/blue striped wire and used that..

my questions are, could the power wire that i'm using be the wrong wire? or could it be something else causing the static n whine?
i turn to the experts and thank you guys in advance.. :tongue (2):

I used to have a GROM USB. I found that the volume is too low. If using a config file to boost the gain, it distort the quality of the tune. So I gave up and went with Dice Mediabridge. As for the constant power source, I hook it up to a constant 12V wire on the clock. I can't remember what color the wire was. Just use a meter to test the wire going into the clock with the car off. One other FXer on here also used to have a GROM that I help installed. No whine noise on either of ours.

Could it be a bad unit? Very possible. I can't remember if there is a ground wire to unit. If there is check to make sure you got good ground to the unit.

i'm gonna make an attempt to hook it up to the clock lead and see what happens.. i bought the grom and honestly shouldve done more research.. if the dice mediabridge is way more worth it i would've gotten that.. if anything ill see if i can return it somehow since i already have a claim for tech with them for it not working.. and no there is no ground wire on there. just the 12v constant

Hahaha, my GROM is available for cheap if you want it. I know it works, I get annoyed by the low gain.

loll, i already bought one and i KNOW the low gain is really gonna bother me.. I'm a dj/ producer and a big audiophile and thats really gonna bother me now.. shit... want to buy mine? :tongue (2): loll...

btw hows the DICE mediabridge treating you.. i read on another post that you were having problems with the bass not giving you enough kick, u ever do something to fix it or kinda grew into it?

Haha, in that case, you really just to to get rid of the GROM.

Yeah, the bass is flat with MB as it is. When I play thru Bluetooth via an Android phone it was flat as well, then I downloaded an Android app called PowerAmp, that solve the bass problem with bluetooth via a phone. The PowerAmp player has a lot more control and give me the bass I wanted. The bass problem with the MB via a USB stick goes away when I had a amp & sub installed. The bass is really good now.

Still another issue with MB if you plan to use it with a USB stick. It has resume play problem. Sometime it works. Most of the time it start from the very first folder/song on the USB stick. No resume problem via Bluethooth since the resume play is on the phone player.

I had the GROM unit too and all it became such a headache to deal with. No matter what firmware I used from them I always had low gain problems, static, 2 different sources playing at the same time, no device working at all....you name it and it happened. Eventually with all the problems they finally gave me a refund and I rid myself of that thing. I thought they had stopped selling it already because of all the problems they had.

la_fx that sux that there's no plug n play unit that works flawless with no quality degradation, i mean damn it is 2012.. wtf :mad.:.. i mean they FINALLY responded to me after too really nasty posts i did to tech services and RMA.. they're sending another unit out to me.. and i swear if this one sux i will personally fly out to CA where they're located and shove it up their behinds lol..

inky, i swear everywhere i look i see nothing but problems are complaints ppl are having about the grom unit.. i wish i did my research before buying it, and no they havent stopped selling it loll.. hopefully they fixed redid the firmware since u had it last and i dont experience those issues... i guess we'll see..

by the way, la_fx, when i hooked it up to the clock lead it received power but now it says NO SAT on the screen, gotta love this thing!

WTF..... You must have a bad unit. NO SAT... mostly means that it not getting power. Does your USB stick have any light on it to tell if the unit got power?

haha yeaa, the usb light is blinking, the ipod charges and all just says NO SAT like if it doesnt exist.. theyre sending me a replacement, hopefully ill get it in the next month or two loll

Soooo back at It and my dash is still apart!!!!! Grom audio sent the replacement and I finally get it today and go n plug it in and guess what? STILL DOESN'T WORK... The unit says NO SAT and my radio doesn't even acknowledge it and it is receiving power.. So here we go again with the emails to them.. Who the hell knows now, maybe the harness is no good? I had it with them

I know this post has been dead for awhile

I was wondering if you ever got your problem resolved? I am having the exact problem with them. Charges, usb works but no sat mode. Only when I pull the fuse under the hood does it work again, until i turn of the car again. Any insight would be great!

honestly, set up a RMA ticket and get ur money back... i ended up buying the dice mediabridge and its way better... not 100% but i've settled with it

Thanks for you fast reply and thanks for the info, I got the Grom to work yesterday for 5 minutes and the sounds was great, but it wont work consistently, so frustrating!! I am sending it back unless they send me a solution, not going to take another replacement once I get the return info. How does the Dice Media bridge sound? Is it CD quality? The FX Bose system is my favorite feature on the FX! Thanks again!

If you plan to play USB stick thru the Dice MediaBridge, you will be disappointed as the there is hardly any bass. I added aftermarket sub and amp, so I got the bass now. It also has problem of remembering the last piece you played. The resume play works sometime.

If you play music from your phone via bluetooth, the quality is depending on the phone music player.

ok, quality thru bluetooth is obv not as great as quality from an ipod or usb stick.. i found that it does lack some bass but that is noticed more depending on the genre of music u listen to.. i listen to house/progressive/trance style music and its fine for me, not 100% but good enough...
honestly, i wouldnt go as far as being disappointed as i went in there expecting it to be exactly what it is.. a satellite emulator.. its not gonna be cd quality but its gonna be close enough.. \

the whole remembering factor on usb, is actually the same in the grom, it wont rem what song it was playing and start from there.. it'll start from the beginning of the folder... i've actually gave up on that and have an ipod plugged in so it remembers where it left off

I see, that makes sense. I actually got the Grom working yesterday after talking with you. I bought a second one for my friend and they told me to try that one and if not send them both back for a refund. So long story short I uninstalled mine, installed the firmware on my friends unit and it still didn't work. In desperation I plunged mine back in and it works now without a problem. I think it has something to do Groms crappy Firmware upgrade system and the Sat recognition on FX35's end. Wasted to much of my life on this. I told them that if breaks in the next month I am returning it for a refund and they said that was fine. The quality is CD like but I will update here once some time has passed and its been tested. Thanks again for help and insight on the problem, I am going to wait before installing it on my G , this company needs to get it together before the sell products like this over the web. The house/progressive on this does sound top notch though :)

good, i'm glad u got it working.. im very satisfied with the mediabridge.. just the flash drive thing that sux and wont rem the location of where it was playing.. (i.e: long dj sets.) but whatever.. im on to different ideas now.. in dash tablet and relocation of the oem screen with an in-car network running thru the aux input of the mediabridge..

When you installed the GROM, and hooked up the NIS02 cable to the back of the stereo into the Sat Radio port did you leave the female end of the NIS02 cable unplugged? Or did you plug the male sat radio line (that was plugged into the sat radio port) into the female of the NIS02? It seems counter intuitive, but you should leave the male sat radio line and the female NIS02 line both disconnected. I had issues with mine before realizing this. Once I disconnected them everything worked great. This is an additional disconnect from the sat radio connections near the wheel well.

Sorry, just read the rest of the thread, I see you got it working. Did your dash lights trigger when you installed? Mine did, and while I have been able to reset most of them (check engine, airbag, tpms, etc) I haven't been able to reset the amber light that says "key" does anyone know a DIY for resetting this? Thanks
