Well, I’ve been thinking of different custom knob ideas. The only other aftermarket knobs I’ve seen are Globe’s and don’t get me wrong – I think Globe’s are fantastic. But, they go well with the overall design of 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] gens. The cold steel really compliments the sophistication and color array on the new Infiniti dashboards. My 1[SUP]st[/SUP] gen, like most earlier 1[SUP]st[/SUP] gens, have aluminum highlights on and around the dash. While I don’t think that steel knobs will be a major clash with neighboring aluminum pieces, I don’t think that steel design is the way to go. Maybe Globe’s just look too classy for the simpler, yet sporty, 1[SUP]st[/SUP] gen dash.
So, I started thinking about aluminum knobs. But Globe’s basic design in basic aluminum will simply lack pizazz. Now I’m left searching for a knob to properly dress up the dash of the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] generation FX. Globe’s steel knobs are too classy. Globe’s design in an aluminum are too basic. Anodized aluminum will look too ricey. Honestly, the stock Infiniti knobs are a good design. I like the black with aluminum strip look and they light up well.
How about some other ideas though? First, I thought of some wild and detailed designs that would go well with aluminum dash highlights and exude a fun sporty look and feel. My thought was to make a knob matching the design of an OEM 8-spoke rim or GTR rim. The outside diameter/surface would be either flat & smooth, or with tire tread, or shaped with lip and no tire. Another option is to include a rotor and caliper behind the spoke design which would be more evident when backlit.
I tinkered around in CAD a little bit with the thought a metal knob of a scale Infiniti 20” rim and maybe with tire tread.

With this elaborate knob design, brushed steel would provide the best look and feel. I don’t think aluminum would have the ideal feel. These pictures show the brushed steel look I would probably go for. Inner rim, spokes, and center cap are still being worked on. This material is a sintered tool steel.

Then I thought of the idea of applying black softouch to the rubber tire portion of the steel wheel knob. This lead to mocking up some plastic rims with rubber tires to match my wheels (OEM 20”s and Hankook RH06 tires). So here’s the current result so far. Two back to back holiday weekends have given so much needed tinker time. We’ll see what direction this goes, if any. I don’t even know how much I like the idea. These knobs add a fun and sporty twist, but I don’t want to detract from any sophisticated or luxury aspects of the FX. If cheesy, I'll stick with the originals which also look just fine. Should I continue with this knob idea or continue with the 1 piece steel wheel knob idea?

First reaction, I am in awe. Particularly with the quality.

I personally think it is on the fence of being cheesy/over the top, but the pure quality pulls it over the edge to the side of, "wow, that's pure custom and really neat."

It's definitely a conversation item in the car, I'd put them in mine for sure.

You weren't kidding about the tools you have access to. Your CAD skills are excellent, very nice job.

Ha! Those are awesome! They're a little silly for my taste but as a project I give you an A+.
It does however make me think about a 1st Gen aluminum knob with a smooth rubber surround...

How did you make those plastic versions?

Thanks, but my CAD needs improvement. I don't do it much at all, so whatever I do is super slow.

The plastic mock ups shown are Maisto 20" rims. The rim OD had to be shaved down to fit the low pro Pegasus rubber. The spline shaft needed a little work too. If I spent a lot more time with the CAD model, I want to make the plastic/rubber look into a 1 piece steel design.

Haha that's freaking sweet!! Wanna sell me a set?

Thanks. It's just a fun thing to play with. I have to get it right though.

Something like this but without the flare at the bottom...

I like that. Are you thinking in a solid center with the beauty ring like your pic, or spoked center?
The rubber can be made separate or overmolded on for best durability. That adds some cost and difficulty, but that's what nicer stuff usually does. There are other coatings to short cut it if needed.

+1 on the above, honestly i liked the knobs in the feeler thread as well. CAD/modeling work looks tight....

My CAD needs help. I can't get the loft on the spokes to be even close to decent.

Wow great idea! I love it, slightly whimiscal, yet sophisticated. :balanced:

I'm glad you started your own knob creation. I don't think you would be stepping on Globes shoes either. He offered, but it seemed to fall through for him. I've been searching this past week on custom knobs. I've found everything from Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers etc. eBay actually offers the aluminum knobs direct from Japan, but they are like $200 for one knob. I think the 03-05 knobs are different from the 06-08 ones too, I should be able to supply a picture later as reference. I also been hoping that the knobs from the 2011+ Ms will fit too. They have a simple chrome halo on them that should match the chrome halo around the dial on the 06-08 center stacks nicely. Need to go to the dealer and ask them to compare knobs for me.

Nice work again, glad someone decided to take initiative!

I've gotten a few inquires to buy these knobs, and frankly, I don't have any to sell. The design is still being worked on and when complete, I'm not going to try and make money off these. It's purely for fun and entertainment. Right now the only physical parts I have made up are the 2 plastic/rubber knobs and the half finished steel part. I wasn't really planning on it, but perhaps once complete, I can offer a wopping production run of 5 or so sets for sale. Don't worry, no GB here!

For now, let me know what you think. If they're liked, I can think about making more down the line. If you think they're a silly idea, let me know that too. You never knew, they might end up becoming permanent fixtures on my desk. I'm open to all kinds of ideas.

Very impressive design and fab work, but I think they are a little too bold for my taste. Just my personal taste, I just don't think they "fit" the interior.

Thanks for the comments!
This little project has made some progress on the development side. The design has been pretty much dialed in, but production will have to wait. I will be making them myself, so I have no one but myself to blame for the timeline. Been busy with other priorities for the moment.
It's purely a project for fun. I've never thought of it with intent to sell.

Not my style, but it's an amazing conversation piece for sure. If you could mass produce this for the tuner market (Scion/Civic/Accord), you'd make money.
