Project Blackout

Hey Everyone!
So, I wanted to get an "orange" seat FX just because the headliner was black! I have a thing for black headliners! I kid...Although I like the "orange" seats, my love for black headliners meant that I just love black interiors in general I guess, so in April of last year I went and got my 08 FX35 in Platinum Graphite on Black leather (with the "greige" (gray-beige) headliner and pillars) and immediately joined IS! I swore that my headliner, etc would be black someday come hell or high water! Well I did it!!

It was my Holiday week project and it took most of it to do it I must say! I am a D-I-Yer of sorts and this was certainly a fitting D-I-Y because I have seen what some have paid to "pimp" their interior in this way. It's expensive! I did this to my Mitsu Evo IX a couple of years (and cars) ago so I had the "experience"! No in depth write-up here -- sorry. I just don't think I could do it right. It's really just a flathead, a Philips head, 10mm and 14mm sockets, spray glue (Super 77 -- one big can -- $16), black paint (4 cans of Krylon Plastic Satin Black -- $23), a bunch of micro-suede (JoAnn's Fabric Store -- $35), patience and a certain anal retentive quality. Oh and don't be afraid to PULL (as in yank). Clips don't intimidate me too much anymore -- the only casualty were my visor clips....twist those guys...twist them...:hmpf:

Here's a big photo montage of the work as it was in-progress. It's all done and fully installed now and I will take some proper final results shots very soon. Just need to hit the local dealer and get those aforementioned visor clips ($16)!! A small note: I painted the d-pillar/speaker panels at first but I actually wound up micro-sueding them!!!! I loved the way the a, b and c-pillars looked in the suede so I had to go all the way!The Verdict:It's amazing!!!! What a transformation!!! I am still a little puzzled as to why I got the micro-suede I gotta confess. On the one hand, I love it - it's soft and cool in an upscale way - but it yearns to be touched (that's what everyone does after I say look at my suede headliner) and when it's gets touched it leaves the mark where it was touched. Not a stain mark - it's just that the fibers get disturbed -- wipen your hand across it and it changes the shade of black where you swiped (see the sunshade shot below)... you guys know what I'm talking about. It kinda bugs me! Well, I brushed it all in one direction today and it looks really sweet...so don't nobody touch it. HA! Anyway, I'll stop ranting - enjoy the pics and I hope this inspires some you guys to give it a go too. It's a great community here and I have learned so much from so many that have been willing to post and inspire so I thought I would return a little bit of it back.(Plus, I finally got enough posts to add pics!)

Thanks and Happy New Year to you all!

Very thorough job, I bet it looks great. I hear you on the properties of suede, the material change marks would make me itch as well.

Great job!! This truly is an easy DIY if you just take your time.. Please post up some pics when you get it all back together.

Nice job man! Us Chicago guys did this to my '04 FX this past summer too. (PMG ^ was one of them that got his hands all over mine, lol) The headliner part was easy, the painting part and visors are the biggest work. The look was fantastic. Did you ever disconnect the power supply from the front seatbelts? This caused an issue with the airbag light going off, but we resolved it with a simple video on YouTube.

If I ever had a silver FX, I would do the black headliner and redo my seats in a red leather. That would look so hot.

Nice thorough job. Love to see some pics updated pics. BTW, how did you go about wrapping the visors? I was thinking of having someone sew a "pocket", slip it over the visor and then seal the seam with an iron like how the factory did.

I agree on the red seats! I see Beemers with that combo and dig it too!!
Regarding the airbag light...yes, I was freaked out by the blinking airbag icon on my display!! I was afraid that I tweaked a curtain or damaged a sensor or unplugged a ... you get the idea. But I found the easy fix online and it worked!! So simple and my mind is at ease. (to a certain acceptable degree).

PMG....you touch my suede....I keel you. Ha!
Thanks guys!!

Pics coming soon! Thanks!
Regarding the visors. Well, you absoulutely have the right idea with the"pocket" thought. There are lots of cutouts as you know, with the vanity mirrors and the extenders so you'd have to allow for that of course. The scary thing about that is getting it all taut around the visor. Suede (at least what I bought) doesn't stretch and I would think stretch would be your friend here. Maybe it's as simple as using a different black material.

As for me, I kinda used the template/pattern approach doing one side at a time and wrapping around to the edges ending where the stitches would be. It looks great imho and this micro-suede was so thin that you can barely see where it ended. I put them off until the very end after I had plenty of suede-wrapping time under my belt!

As a heads up, if you buy headliner specific material, it will stretch.

IPics coming soon! Thanks!

exactly what I'm going to do to my fx, after the black suede headliner!

nice job OP, i did this on 2 previous cars and it is a pain, but the end result is worth it.

Looks fantastic! I did my headliner in black too a year ago and interior wise, it's the best mod I have done. It is a hugely time consuming job but so worth it. I painted my headliner though instead of fabric just because I'm worried about it falling and some point in the future and don't wanna ever have to redo all that work lol. The fabric paint thing worked out great and looks even if you put enough layers on, the only downside is that is is real ruff to the touch now but hell, I never rub my roof so it's all good. Painted all the side pillars with plasti dip and that has a great semi-matte finish that matches the rest of the interior real well. So far the only real downside is that with the beige pillars you couldn't tell my windshield was lightly tinted but now from the front you see nothing inside but black, cops don't appreciate that hahahha
great job:top:
