Where do you put your cell?

Yep, I agree.... but way easier to get into an accident while texting.

Just gotta know when to do it. Around town, I'll only text if I'm at a red light, or the only car in the immediate area. On the highway, I never text while passing semi's because they scare me, and when I do text, I always look up every second or hold the phone on the steering wheel so I can see both. Usually I'm the only car so I have enough wiggle room. Texting in traffic scares the hell out of me because of all the times I'll just be driving along and have to slam on the brakes for traffic, or a semi that just shredded a tire a couple minutes ago and now the cars in front of me are slowing down to avoid it. Times like that, if you lose even one second while being distracted, then you could be toast.

I hope you are kidding Stu.

You guys are crazy to text while driving. Puts other peoples lives in jeopardy and is downright unsafe. It is illegal in many places.

Texting while driving in any situation is careless. You may be the only car in an immediate area but what about the kid who forgets to look both ways?

Texting

I don't think.anyone should text while driving. I was just saying its nice to see your phone and who is calling and such. I own an insurance company and get probably 5 calls a day from marketers, if i could not see my phone i would not have the option of not answering. And as far as Texting i have speech to text so it isn't a problem while driving.

I have yet to come across any young children walking across the interstate in the middle of the desert, but I will keep an eye out.

If you want to do safer texting while driving...

I use Vlingo for android for text messaging while in car.

iPhone users can use siri to text message.

That's what FCW, LDW, LDP, DCA is for! :wink (2):

This post is gonna get me in trouble!

I try never to text....there is some rarity chance I do sometimes though, mostly at a light stopped and pull over if need to text lots. I'm just saying the above stuff does help, but is not a substitute.

I'm guilty also.. I text while I'm on the road.
Normally I check my phone at stop lights.
When I'm on the highway on the far left lane, I rarely check my phone.
Also, if I have my iPhone as opposed to my BlackBerry, I don't text on the road.
I'm not comfortable texting on a touch screen. I text without looking.
Calls go to my Bluetooth headset.

I'm with you, though I think you slightly understated the infrequency of the appropriate times for texting while driving (which is why its illegal at all). The fact is that its only dangerous while you're moving, and even then there are times (like Stu described above) in which I think its safe. The times are few and far between, but they exist. They are the same times you reach into the back seat to give your kid his/her pacifier, the times you carefully take a drink of your 100+ degree coffee, and the times you look at a GT-R for longer than it takes to type "lol" with your thumb.

I do however support the laws that ban texting while driving, because you just can't teach common sense...

Personally I dislike cell phones in general. My phone is supplied by my workplace so I am required to carry it. If I had my way I would toss it out the window at 60mph and feel great about it.

hey George, I'm with you. I hate the darn things. I don't like them interfering with my life. it shocks me to look around the streets and see all these bozos walking around the streets with their cell phones pasted to the side of their heads or typing out another text message while they are crossing a busy intersection. These people should get a grip and do not let these things control their lives.

I have taken a lot of trips down the highway at all hours of the morning, at it never ceases to amaze me how many people are on cell phones at such hours. Who the hell are they talking to at 2-3am in the morning?

I might be one of these people you are seeing, but I work in a fast-paced work environment that requires me to send emails and take/make phone calls at any moment. However, I don't see my phone as something that is controlling my life; I see it as the device through which I can control my life. It is annoying though when people don't know how to multitask in a way that is unobtrusive to everybody else around.

i place mine horizontally in the space between the steering wheel and instrument cluster (android phone with rubber case). when i run google nav, the screen is front and center. great visibility.

The same reason that texting while driving is illegal is the same reason most streets have a 35 mph speed limit. Not because everyone needs to go 35, but because you have to watch out for that one person who shouldn't go above 35. Same reason that always someone out there not smart to know how to text and drive at the same time. I did some tests yesterday, and it takes just as much time for me to hit a letter at a time while texting as it does to reach other and change the radio, change the A/C, look into my blind spot, and heaven forbid I see something cool on the side of the road. I'm not dumb enough to sit there and stare at my lap for the whole time I'm texting.
