Car Cigarette Lighter

Hey guys,

My cars front cigarette lighter stopped working all of a sudden. The one that's bside the change box. I checked out all the fuses. The ones in the middle work fine. Any ideas?

I don't know why, but the cigarette lighter port it not supposed to used as a power port for accessories. DC accessories are to be run thru the console, rear seat, or hatch power ports. Is it possible that some higher power devices will not power up on the cigarette lighter port?

If it was working before but stopped all of a sudden, I would think it's a wiring problem if it is not a fuse. Most likely a short or a broken wire at the back of the assembly.

It is not all that difficult to remove the console trim peices - no tools are required, they all just "pop" off. There are a couple threads here on IS that describe removing the center console if you want to give it a shot.

I keep a small LED flashlight in my lighter socket. The socket charges it.

So what is it for then?

It doesn't seem that this is the likely problem, but here's an excerpt anyhow.
The Owner's Manual reads, "The cigarette lighter socket is a power source for the cigarette lighter element only. The use of the cigarette lighter socket as a power source for any other accessory is not recommended."

Many owners probably do not take this too seriously. Other warnings located on the same page include "the cigarette lighter should not be used while driving", "the sunglasses holder should not be used while driving", "do not use the sunglasses holder for anything other than glasses", and "do not leave sunglasses in the sunglasses holder while parked in direct sunlight".
(These are all true and taken from page 2-30 of the 2003 manual.)

Kudos to the Infiniti Legal Dept for keeping us all safe.

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe it's for lighting cigs...?

Touché

But the reason I said that was:

#1, My Cig lighter had one of those black caps that says (acc. power only, not to be used as lighter) or something to that regard
#2, any cigarette lighter element I try to put in either doesn't fit (a.k.a doesn't let the door close up), or doesn't work (doesn't click in to warm up and holding it in doesn't work either).

So maybe it's for lighting cigs in your car, but it sure hasn't lit a single damn cig in mine.

I wish it would though:frown:

but for the record, I have charged a few phones from it with no problems to report.

You mean the one on the console right? According to Infinitipartsusa, on your 2006 FX35 it is called a "lighter assembly" and comes with an element. :dontknow:

It's #21 shown here:
