Hey Guys, glad to see the interest for detailing. Seems like some of you have a great handle on the process and products. I suggest you take it slow at first as its tempting to buy and buy and test and test; its easy to become addicted to buying…so start slow!.
I think it probably best if I send you a link to a site that has everything you need to know about car detailing. You can read all the how too’s, watch the video’s ect ect.
Here something of immediate interest that anyone can do. Its called the “BAG TEST” You may think your paint surface is perfect, free of comtaminants, break dust, pollutants, acid rain, you may think its prefect and silky smooth. Try this test; on a clean section of your hood lightly run your fingers over the paint of your car, see if you feel any bumps ect. ( you probably won’t) Now do this:
The Bag Test: Put a plastic sandwich bag over your hand and lightly rub your fingertips over the paint. See if it feels different (I’ll bet it does). If it feels gritty or rough, your paint is contaminated with acid rain, pollutants, break dust ect and need to be clayed. This gritty feel detracts from the shine and prevents sealants and wax for properly working on your finish.
Here is a list of some of the things I use and like: (The link at the end with give you hours and hours of additional info) As a hobbist, here are some things to consider:
· 2 bucket wash system with grit guard.
· Auto Shampoo: I like Meguires Gold Class, its OTC and works great. I bought a gallon of it at Costco. Foams up great, and it protects the finish and does not strip the wax/sealant.
· Buy plenty of Micro Fiber towels, 2-3 micro fiber wash mits as well as a drying towel, my favorite drying towel is Cobra Guzzler Towel
· Window Care: I like stoner-invisible-glass-trio.. Use with mirco-fiber towels
· Sealants/Waxes: I love Opti-Seal or Ultima Paint Gurad Plus. Over that I like to layer with Optimum Spray Wax. Each application takes less than 10 minutes; the protection is amazing and the shine is deep and wet! I have also used Collinite 845 but the process takes a bit longer. This is the stuff that defines a show car.
· For the wheels and tires; I clean both with Amazing Roll Off, I treat the wheels as above with Opti-Seal layered with Optimum Spray Wax and I finish the tires with Ultima Tire Trim Gurad.
I hope this gives a start into the detailing hobby. Remember start slow. I have a 2010 FX 35; its because of that car that I found my way into detailing.
Good Luck Guys….I hope the detailing discussion continues on this forum!

BTW, the new technolgy of today's spray sealant's and spray wax's allow you BOTH protect and produce a show room in under 10 minutes. Of course, the "old-timers" still enjoy the hours it takes to apply and remove the paste products.
Keep the detailing discussion going!
