Gas Gauge Level Fix

Hmmm you got me thinking about the right side sender unit now! From the look when I had them out, they sure looks like they're interchangeable. I'm going to take them out later to confirm it for sure if the two sender unit are interchangeable or not.

Yeah the left side from InfinitiPartsUSA is $84.30 now.

The pics below confirm that the two sender units are NOT interchangeable.
The stand alone (driver side) sender unit is on the left. The fuel pump (passenger side) with sender unit is on the right.

John (Turbocad6) is right about the sender unit on the fuel pump.
You will have to buy the entire fuel pump if the sender unit was bad.
The fuel pump listed at $258.

sheesh, can I just leave my car with you for a month and you can fix everything to brand new??? =)

Perfect diy! Fixed the stupid fuel gauge problem! Also, I think a better way is to have a cup ready instead of rags......after removing that fuel line, it was shooting EVERYWHERE........i would say at least 1 cup of fuel.......can you edit the procedures and say to have a pan or cup ready to catch the spraying fuel?

Updated! My guess is your tank is probably half full?

So I completed this DIY tonight after being completely fed up with filling my tank and being on empty after 150 miles. my gas gauge was WAY OFF. I attached some pics, theyre self explanatory except for the abundant amount of children's cereal located under my rear seat.

Bought the fx from dealer 3 weeks ago with 49k miles, told the dealer the problem and they said theres nothing they can do and to drive conservatively. (assholes) So i did the DIY and cannot wait to feel confident on how much gas I have in my tank.

users beware, the floating level will get caught on brackets inside the tank. be very gentle. enjoy the pics. this project took me 90 minutes tops, if your gas gauge is off this is a great fix it :smile (2):

Thanks for this fix. This just happened to me this week and I think my warranty is up (160K...). I'll be doing this soon, but since I have the DTE and the trip meter to go by, might not be immediate. Not to be a Nervous Nellie, but it might pay to add a note to disco the battery to the top. Thanks again. God I love the Internet.

EDIT: 40 minutes start to fin. Hope it works for me. Showed 90 Miles on DTE when I did this, no squirting gas to deal with. No doubt saved me several hundred bucks, since the last time I was at the dealership they dinged me 5 bills to fix the horn... :/

DOUBLE EDIT: Worked, period. Thanks to all!

Hahaha, glad to hear. The Stealership may easily take 8 bills for this problem.

I finally had some time this morning so I used this walk through and took care of the funky fuel gauge behavior in the wife's '05. Thanks for the great writeup! From start to finish it took me about 30 minutes.

I would recommend disconnecting the fuel pump connector and then start & run the engine until it dies to get rid of the pressure in the line. I'e done so with other cars, but just sorta spaced it this morning. I made quite a mess. :)

What "fuel pump connector" are you talking about? You mean the electrical or the fuel line to the pump? In any case, not sure if disconnecting these as you mentioned will helps. If you disconnect the electrical connector to the fuel pump, the remaining pressure in the pump would still be there. If you disconnect the fuel line connector, you're making a mess already as the pressure in the fuel line will be released when you did that.

FWIW, when I did mine I cracked the gas cap before I pulled the fuel lines. No mess for me, but the tank was pretty low, too. Can't tell which helped.
to gas cap. Which gas cap are you referring to?
==================================================================

What I found the best in minimize gas quirt out when disconnecting the fuel line is when the gas tank is low. In any case, wrap a piece of rag or having one close by in case there is a spill. There will be some for sure.
