DTRL fog HID issue

Ever since installing hid fogs, I have weird issue. As they serve as dtrl here in Canada, sometimes when I start the car one of them dont work.

It is random issue, sometimes it is right and other times left side. Sometimes I can go for a week without this problem.

Anyone with the same issue or solution?
 
HIDs hate turning on and off, especially th fogs, I had them as dtrl with a KP tech relay to control them by themselves and had so many problems...

I had this issue when I first installed them, and all it was was a loose connection from the ballast to the internal cable , this may sound obvious but make sure your connections are as tight as possible. Been running without issues for 4 months and no problems. As for HID's "hating" being turned on and off all the time, it has nothing to do with functionality of the bulbs other than they just might burn out faster in the long run.
 
Any other Canadians with this issue? Debating if I should just put bulbs in or actual HIDs. I'm going to go with 3000K bulbs though. Love the super yellow during the day and night.
 
Just installed HIDs into my fogs as well, which are my day time lights.

They don't like to light up when I start the car, I have to re-ignite them by turning on my headlights to get the fogs to start up. It's ALWAYS both lights too.

Could this be related to loose plugs on BOTH sides?

ALSO... my FM signal is weaker now when the fogs are on. I'm wondering if its because the ballast is sitting on the car frame?
 
I have the same problem. When i first installed the left side it was working good. but when i did the right side the left side works intermittent.
 
I just did a test and it seems when I start the HIDs from cold, they won't ignite with the start of the car. I have to manually start them after the car is started to get them going. Once they are warmed up, then if I shut off the car and start again, they will ignite.

Maybe its the kit I have.

That is weird, but you do know that DTRL's do not come on until you release the hand brake right ? I hope you are not just starting your car , while the brake is on , and running to see if your DTRL's are working :tonguey:

HAHA, yeah, I know. I've tried no methods, but it seems like there is not enough juice to light them up on the first try until they are some what warmed up.

Examples:

Start car with hand brake on, release, no lights

Start car with no hand brake on, no lights

I have to turn on headlights WITHOUT the fogs on, then turn on the fogs after that to get them to light. If I already have the fogs on ON position when I turn on the headlights, they don't fire either.

Strange... gonna get the Kit swapped.
 
I have the DDM HID for my fogs and have no issues whatsoever with mine. Just adding this to the stats.

I spoke with the store where I picked up the HIDs and he said that it may be because the day time lights only give 6V of power and the HIDs require at least 9Vs to power up. He's going to give me some type of decoder today, which he says should do the job. I'll see when I get to the shop after work.

I have the ddm fogs in mine and sometimes (mainly during the winter) when I start up the car only one is on. Usually wait a few seconds and turn off the switch then turn it on then both are on. Hasn't happened since last year but for less than $40 I can't complain.

To summarize what was already said and some further information:

1) HID ballasts draw more AMPs vs regular bulbs at startup, but typically draw less AMPs while running.

2) At a cold startup, depending on how many things you have on (headlights, radio, etc...), your car won't have enough AMPs to ignite the HID bulb.

Solutions:
1) Buy a relay and connect directly to the battery so it has enough AMPs to start up.
2) Make sure you have a digital ballast vs an analog ballast, digital takes less AMPs.
3) Don't leave headlights on auto/leave radio off/etc... Once car is on and running, then try switching the lights on.

Any audio shop can do this as they typically have relays w/ fuses to do this in a heart beat.
