Recieved my new Porter Cable 7424XP....Time to tackle these swirls!!

Of course black shows the swrils the most. I did the wet clay one time and it really produced a nice shiney coat but I gotta tell ya it was time consuming. I'll have to give this stuff a try. Thanks for the post.

Here are some more updated pictures. I finished the rest of FX over this past weekend minus the trunk which I have yet to finish.

Don't mind the messy garage:

Claybaring the paint prior to polishing with the Porter Cable:

Taped all the plastic trim and vents. I also taped the edges of each panel to make sure I don't burn the edges with the buffer or get unwanted polishing residue in the cracks:

Here is the problem I ran into. After polishing I turned on my 1000watt halogen lighting to inspect the results and boom! There was this big electrical surge in the garage and it blew up my lamp!! Thank god my Porter cable buffer wasn't on, but the halogen lamp was and it's pretty much dead now. So I had to rely on LED lighting to inspect my results:

NO SWIRLS:

NO SWIRLS on the fender now either:

As you can see I'm not too good with taking pics lol. I'll try to get more stuff up later this week when I get a chance to finish the trunk and some touch up spots. The more I work on this Scratch Shield paint, the better I get at it. I started developing my own technique with the Porter Cable and I'm getting faster at it with better results. Let me just tell you one thing. If you don't atleast start off with a yellow pad with Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut Compound your not going to see any dramatic results at all. One thing I did find out though is that in order to see dramatic results, I need to apply 25 pounds of pressure to the polisher when buffing the paint which is 10 more pounds than recommended with Porter Cable. I did a heavy load of research and found out the Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound works better with more pressure and weight applied. And while applying 25 pounds of pressure, it's recommended to move the buffer at a steady pace of 1 inch per minute. If you go too fast over the panels, your not removing enough clear, meaning your not going to see any results at all.

After using the Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut Compound, I followed up with Meguiar's M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on a white pad to clean up any hazing or marring left behind from the more aggressive combo I used.

Let me just say it's almost damn near impossible to burn the paint with the Porter Cable 7424XP buffer. That's why it's recommended for idiots and novices like me. It's a DA (dual action) polisher not a rotary buffer. Rotary's are only recommended for professional use and WILL burn through the clear coat if you don't know what your doing.

very nice Aaron! So I've been needing to clay/wax my car since winter and still haven't done it, but looks like your are light years ahead. Seems like I never have time anymore....I don't get it....I run out of time so fast these days.

still got no time to polish my FX :(

I'm working with 3M polishing system with dedicated pads.

Heard that the paint on the II gen is so soft that i can be scratch even with microfibra :/

Forgot about this thread and forgot I never posted any of the amazing results I experienced with this machine!!

It's been about 8 months ago since I polished the whole car with my Porter Cable. When I originally tackled the paint I removed about 90%+ of the swirl marks. Since those 8 months have passed I haven't really received any more scratches or swirling. I always do proper washing techniques to avoid that. Which includes the 2 bucket method wash. One with clean soapy water filled with a quality car wash soap and the other bucket for rinsing the sheepskin wash mitt in to release dirt and grit trapped in the mitt. See not doing this is what leads to swirl marks. If your mitt has dirt and grit in it all your doing is dragging the dirt across the paint inducing swirl marks. That's why its recommended to wash the mitt out in the rinse bucket for every panel you do. AND ALWAYS WORK FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. If you work the opposite way around all your doing is dragging whats at the bottom to the top of the car.

Here are some pictures of the paint out in DIRECT sunlight. Please excuse the dirt and water spots. That's because it rained on Sunday and I haven't washed it since then. But trust me the paint is optically clear as can be! Notice no swirls in sight :-):

BEST $200 I EVER SPENT!! The Porter Cable is not only idiot proof for people like me, but it's totally worth every penny. When the spring time comes I'm going to go back over the entire car again and get it 100% swirl free this time!

Agreed, I love mine. Just makes everything that much easier. Can't wait to hit my FX with it!

Looks good Aaron.

I also have a Porter Cable and it's great. I have only used it on my other vehicles, never tried it on the FX yet.

Dude those aren't swirls those are scratches. My best guess is the lazy-ass stealership running it through their automated scratch installer!
Now that you have it buffed you can remove the swirls, and trust me they are there under the right light, the best product bar none is Wizards finish cut, then Wizards shine master. I guarantee it is the best stuff you will ever use, hands down, look here:

??? Did you read through my whole thread bro. I already removed all the swirl marks myself lol.

Yeah Bro the pictures of your swirl marks are scratches. Swirl marks is from the buffer that was used to remove the scratches and with your car being black I guarantee there are buffer swirls and the stuff I listed above takes care of it. I agree with your choice in compounds I am a huge mothers fan but the wizard is the best on black paint it will remove what mothers won't. I'm speaking in regards to the final coat the finishing step of the buffing and compounding process.

There are no swirls or scratches on my paint trust me. No matter what lighting it's under whether it's sun light or 1000 watt halogen lighting. And I used a Porter Cable buffer which is a DA (dual action) polisher. Its made to remove swirls and scratches not induce more swirls than what was already on there. And for the compounds and polishes I didn't even use Mothers I used Meguiars. For the finishing process I used Meguiars M205 which is an very fine ultra finishing polish that jewels the paint and removes any hazing left behind from the stronger Meguiars M105 Compound I used previously. I have a feeling you didn't read through every page.

A while back about thousands of grows decided to come near my house and shitted all over the hood, roof and other parts of the car. All of it came off but some swirling and marring was left behind from the gritty shit of the birds. Freaking ridiculous. Almost one year of being perfect and it all goes down the drain. Swirling here and there. But I will be working on the paint again this Spring. I just bought these new pads called Surbuf Microfinger pads. These pads are extremely aggressive and offer more cut than the yellow pads I used. Meaning this time I will get the FX 100% swirl and defect free. The clear coat may be soft but it's ultra rock hard when it comes to correction:

How to use them:

Also finally invested in a paint thickness gauge to measure highs and lows in the clear.:top:

Looks great Aaron, nice and clean. After a year of hesitation, finally going to pull the trigger on a PC this summer (moving for work, and will finally have a private garage with enough space) and pick up some panels from a junkyard as you suggested!

Hows the reliability on your PC7424? I was looking at the Griot's one too but seems to have some people complaining about it burning out quickly.
