Car won't start

I can hear the starter start up but right before the engines suppose to stay at idle...it dies. Anyone have this problem before?
Ive tried placing the key in the key fob pocket, pushing the shifter to make sure its in park, locking unlocking the car with no success. Doesnt seem like a dead battery, but who knows. Now I'm posting this in my car while waiting for roadside assistance to take the car to metro infiniti.
What a crappy morning, I'm only five miles away from work, note I'll probably have to work the weekend to make up for today :frown:.

I actually tried that, no luck though, engine doesn't rev up higher before it dies. Reacts the same as if I didn't give it gas. Didn't want to try more than twice though, worried it might flood the engine.

Does the FX actually run for a minute and die or does it try to turn over and nothing? Inquiring minds are inquiring.

It's hard to flood a fuel injected motor, not impossible, but very hard. Try your fuel pump fuse or possibly a clogged fuel filter. Sounds like you're not getting enough gas. It's pooling enough to start but not getting enough to run. :err:

It doesn't run for a minute, it turns over, I hear the exhaust as the engine starts to rev up...then dead. So fx is running for maybe 1.5 seconds?

I hope it's something simple like the fuel pump fuse. A clogged fuel filet would suck as I always put in premium 76 or chevron and I'm under 30k.

tow truck is here, will update when I get more info.

Good luck and keep us updated. Hate to see fellow FX'ers stranded. :frown:

& if it were leaking on the intake side, it would turn over & not start. But you get it to start, hmmm. You get no idle at all?

Seems like it may be a sticky throttle body or at least that's what the diagnosis is as of now. Weird, I always thought that if the throttle body was dirty I would notice some kind of performance decrease or rough idle but I had none of those symptoms. However, I do make alot of short trips.
So I guess everyone should clean their throttle bodies every 25-30k regardless of symptoms if they don't want to get stranded.
We'll see what happens after they try that fix.

As for an intake leak Im sure they would find that if its the case, I had a jwt intake on before but went back to stock the last 5k miles and it was running fine.

On the plus side, they gave me a Malbec Black M37 loaner car. This color is sickk.I really think I would have had a hard time choosing between this and the FX if it was available. It has Eco mode! I'm envious of the improved display too, its so crisp and xm stations have icons. The interior is beautiful too.

I'll update once they let me know when I can pick up my car, probably sometime next week. I lost a rear front mudflap trim piece and it'll take til next week for the part to arrive. More time with the M:smug:

Yeah, you need the Nissan Consult device on that. Too many servos & motors to go error guessing on these high tech rides. Dont forget to do a master ECU reset after playing with the TB. If after the TB is serviced & if idle is jumpy or steady high over 750rpm spec, you'll likely throw the CEL & then ECU needs a master reset . . which can only be done by Consult. Only saying cuz you're new

gto- If the dealer cleans the TB, I'm assuming they'll know about the ECU reset right?

I had to bite the bullet and let them clean it otherwise I'd have had to tow the car back home, clean the throttle body myself, and pray that it starts.

Getting her back tomorrow so I hope they come up with something better than a dirty/sticky throttle body since that would make me nervous when she gets around the 50-60k mark and I'm on a roadtrip. Maybe I should keep throttle body cleaner in my car?

On a side note... I'm over the m37. It's a nice smooth car with some power and a nice interior but as a whole it is boooring. I feel like I'm in a sexy Avalon or ES350...hard to get excited.

I miss my FX and her predator face. Still a big fan of Malbec Black though.

So got the vehicle back yesterday, dealer is still saying the cause was a sticky throttle body that stranded me in a parking lot...with 27k on the odo. The car seems fine now, just wish I didn't have to fork over the bill for the throttle body cleaning.

RPMs at idle is at 700, is that normal? I forgot what it was before and I'm wondering if I need to do the ECU reset.

Some interesting notes from their vehicle multipoint inspection.

- My cabin in-air filter requires immediate attention.
I just changed this out with the baking soda/carbon one a month ago so maybe they thought it was dirty because it was gray?

- Rear brakes are at 3mm and 4mm, Fronts are at 6mm both sides. I thought front's wear faster than rears? Could it be from using my parking brake every time before I shift into P? How long do you guys think I have left?
I really want to upgrade to FX50 brakes, but haven't ordered all the parts yet. If it's very soon, might just pick up some Akebono pads (I think thats what they use for OEM).

1st gen throttle bodies are very fragile. Just a little dirty sometimes will cause the issues you observed. Especially if you messed around the engine area lately(intakes) I remember mine was $70 at the dealership..but you have 2 intakes and throttle bodies....I had it cleaned once at 40k when I installed my intake, i'm now at 94k and no issues.

FX brakes are a little different. Backs almost always go before fronts. The FX rear brakes apply more pressure causing the car to squat instead of nosedive. Try it out...you'll notice that their isn't that much nosedive under hard braking especially for such a heavy car.

If you're idle is steady in that range, you sound good. ECU reset is not required, & if it were, it was likely done by the dealer before delivery.

700 RPM's during idle is right.

For the microcabin filter you can check it without removing the glovebox by opening the hood. Then removing the battery compartment cover, and shining a flash light into the back where you will find the microcabin filter there. This allows you to check up on it. It definately doesn't need to be changed it you just changed it. The dealer is just trying to rip you off with unwanted services.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm glad everything sounds normal. So glad to have her back. Nothing infiniti makes beats driving the FX...except maybe the FX50 or them super/turbo charged ones popping up.

JdTrader - ~$168....yea :eek.:

Fire0nic3FX - lol, that was my first thought too, but then the aftermarket filter I put on is kinda grayish in color because of the carbon added so I'm going to chalk it up to innocent error in judgement.

toy4x - Good to know about the brakes. I always liked how I could come to a smooth stop without the nosedive, just didn't know the genius behind it.

Just got a check engine light tonight while on the road....:mad.:

Only symptom I see is that when I accelerate and let off the gas, the rpm drops below 1k and bounces back up.

Gotta make another trip to the dealer, glad I didn't leave for memorial weekend yet.

Hold up I knew your situation sounded familiar, there is a technical service bulletin on this:

ITB10042

IF YOU CONFIRM The customer reports any of the following: - Engine hesitation at idle or very low speeds, and/or - Engine speed drops lower than expected when decelerating or coming to a stop. ACTIONS 1. Refer to Step 2 in the Service Procedure to confirm this bulletin applies to the vehicle you are working on. 2. If this bulletin applies, reprogram the ECM. See this bulletin for further detail.

Thanks for that info Fireonic3x, I hope they know about that.

Anyway the dealer is saying the problem is due to the catalytic converter so they swapped mine out for a new one and said problem fixed. I'm no mechanic but new catalytic converter at 30k smells like anchovies. Whatever, its under warranty. How long is the lemon law valid? So far I have non-starting, check engine <<bouncing RPMS danger while driving? probably going to be a tough sell.

I never had any problems until this month. I hate May too much other shit went wrong this month as well. I guess when it rains it shits all over you...or something like that.
