Annoying lag, when trying to accelerate

Is it a bad idea to keep swtiching from D to DS while driving back and forth ? I feel as if the tranny is getting abused that way. I always thought that switching from D to DS or vice versa should be done while the car is stopped...

Why would you even want to? I dont get the question.
Switching while driving wouldnt hurt a thing. The tranny is controlled by ECU.

Just asking if it would hurt the tranny if you keep switching back and forth, lets say while youre ind rive and you need to overtake the car ahead you would switch to DS then switch back and so forth....

I'll usually switch when I feel like driving aggressively, so sometimes I switch back and forth. DS to me is normal and D is like heavy fuel save mode.

Oh, ye i agree, the fuel consumption is like night and day, I can actually see the arrow going down on DS mode lol

Sorry for hijacking the thread but does your ride have a "DS" mode? I know the newer models switch to DS mode when you throw in the shift knob to manual mode (then goes to M mode when you shift up or down) but my '06 doesn't have a so called DS mode. It just goes straight to manual mode. Im wondering if some of the '06 models have the DS mode?

Hey eric mine is just like yours and goes straight into M, no DS

Sorry for the confusion, mine does go to "m" also, i just consider it to be the same thing as DS since its so much faster than D...

Welcome to the world of the 7-speed transmission.
As several have already pointed out, DS mode is a solution (albeit not a perfect one, but works). You will use more gas in DS if that's a consideration, but you will never have any lag in acceleration.

Same thing is happening to me. I probably never really paid any attention to it before. I was accelerating on the highway today and I needed to overtake this C350 benz when changing a lane and I push the accelerator MORE than half way and there was like a 2-3 second lag/delay before the FX actually dropped down a gear and the power was delivered. Scared the shit out of me cause the FX wouldn't go for like a second or two when I needed to overtake the Benz and I almost side swiped the benz cause I couldnt speed up. Only fix I see for this is to use DS mode when you need power delivery right away or use manual mode with the paddles to drop gears right away. Otherwise it's a slug in regular D mode.

I already know the problem with it. The transmission is wanting to stay in too high of a gear when cruising or coasting on the highway. I found this out when I slapped it over into manumatic mode and downshifted on the highway. It went from 7th to 6th gear since thats what the screen showed. That means the whole time I was cruising on the highway the FX was in 7th gear the whole time.

I don't blame the transmission for this at all. I blame Infiniti for screwing up the programming in the TCM on these cars (FX35/50, G37, EX35/37, etc, etc). They program these cars to stay in such a high gear to save on gas. Sucks though that the programming ruins the fun of what is a really nice transmission.

Aaron couldn't describe it any better, I hate the lag it has. It would be sweet if a reputable shop familiar with Nissan/Infiniti came up with some type of sporty program they could upload in the fx to make it more enjoyable. I'm sure the mpgs wouldn't be too far off. I average 20 right now and wouldn't mind going down to 17/18 and actually have better throttle response with no lag or gear searching.
I'm sure something will come up a few years down the road and the warranties will be expired by then so it won't matter :-)

I wish there was a shop too that could tweak the programming. It's obviously the programming thats causing this. I could care less about the MPG's to be honest. I just want my FX to be powerful and responsive when I need it to be. That's all I ask for lol!! Screw this gas saving crap lol. The FX is not a grandpa car, it was meant to be driven the way it's advertised, "SUV with a heart of a sports car" just like the window sticker said when I bought it.

This is why I'm getting an extended warranty so that when they finally do come out with the right programming, I can have it done under warranty when that time does come.

Yeah all the newer vehicles have it (well most anyway) but the way the new 7 speed tranny is programmed is to save on mpg's. Basically goes straight to the highest gear (7th) as soon as it can. Even had a rep from Infiniti come down to the dealer to check mine out because I thought something was wrong.
He said its normal and they've been receiving lots of complaints but its the way its supposed to perform.

I belive you on that one buddy! I watched some reviews and videos on other cars with 7 speed transmissions. Some reviewers complained of lagging and gear searching from the 7 speed ZF dual clutch transmission in the Porsche Panamera. I've also heard a few complains on the 7 speed tranny's in some early model Ben's with 7 speeds. It seems like transmissions with such a high number of gears all do this!

the new chrysler 300 has 8 speed tranny.. by the time we get to 2015 will all be driving big rigs with 13 speed trannys

Aaaron and Jesse....I'm with you guys....same exact for me and same complaints...I notice it every time I drive because I drive VERY sporty most of the time...I typically anticipate when I drive sport and when I do, it's always in DS mode just in case.

Also, here is something I noticed that is very very interested and doubt it's purely coincidental.....I noticed if the FX is on an incline confirmed incline downhill....I notice the lag is worse much more frequently....not sure if you noticed this...Aaron, I'm curious with the benz if you were on any sort of incline when the lag was bad. I have no idea why that would matter....I'm just saying it's something I noticed multiple times.

It wasn't on an incline, it was on a flat road when I tried to overtake the Benz. That's when the delay/lag happened.

But yeah I noticed the delay/lag when accelerating up an incline too. I usually have to stomp on the gas to get it to downshift to go up the hill. It's pretty terrible because you can hear the transmission making the engine bog down and chug along as you accelerate.

Very unfortunate problem with an otherwise great car. Worst programmed transmission I have had the misfortune of owning.
