2003-2008 FX45 Engine Tuning UpRev Osiris and UniChip

Chris, that how I read it too. $600 for the cable and possibly some software it needs to collect, analyze and modify the TMC table. I have a feeling the software will be have to be included in the price; otherwise they not gonna sell many if $600 is just for the cable.

As Ed have said and I too agree, Transgo Shift kit still the way to go. I should looking to what the Unichip can do to the trans when I have a chance to talk to Aaron at Unichip.

Hey Andy,
How is the UniChip working out for you? Anything new to report? I'm interested in either this or the UpRev.

Thx Chedman...have you tried it yet? Was wondering if I should do this or just get an
UpRev and dyno tune. Think the UniChip will be cheaper tho...

You can dyno tune with the UniChip too, that's why I see as betting the better option.

UniChip for the win. You can use it on any car and take it with you.

All I can say is when I install the chip, all my mods seems to work in harmony and a bit stronger. When I push it, it goes without a brief second pause like before I have the chip.

As for dyno number. I have not taken it in for a dyno.

How hard was the install, any pictures?

Yes install pics would be great Andy...and I know any of your DIYs will be easy to follow!!
So how did Aaron @ UniChip do your tune? Did you provide him with a list of your mods and he gave you a map? Curious as to what he based this off of? Does he have a set of maps specifically for our FXs??

Will you be taking to get dynoed soon to get some concrete numbers?

Simple plug and play onto the ECU in the front passenger foot well. It's a tight squeeze to fit the additional bulky wiring in there. It is doable though. As I recall I did took some pic as I was installing it. I must have forgotten to post it. I get them up tonight.

Eventually, I get it dynoed to get some concrete numbers. I will have to get in touch and work with Aaron. I hope he not too busy now. Lost touch with Aaron. I call him a couple of times after I got it installed and was going to have him tune it over the internet, but somehow it haven't happen. I will soon. From my readings, we will need to buy a software/application and a usb cable from them, install it on a laptop/pc with a usb cable hooked up to the chip and laptop with their application running in order for them to tune it via the internet.

Thx andy...u da man. So how are you normally running...in normal or aggressive? And
how easy is it to switch back and forth? Is it simply a switch on the actual unichip?
How did Aaron set up your modes?...I was wondering what he based your maps off of.

Aggressive all the time lol. Haven't really run on "Nornal". Maybe just the first day. I had it on for about 2 months now.
The kit comes with a toggle switch with a 6 foot long wire so you can locate the switch anywhere you want. The $19.95 toggle switch it comes with is not design to do on the fly switching. I spoke with their tech to confirm about mode switching, they said you can do it when you're not under load, but not recommended. If you buy one their fancier $75 switch, you can do it. The reason that he gave was the toggle switch just a dumb switch and you risk of cut off feed to the ECU while it switching over; whereas their fancy multi-map switch has a circuit behind it so there will be no cut off when switch on the fly. Currently, mine is just their base map with exhaust and intake mods.

Now that we talk more on the chip, I will hunt Aaron down to see what I need to get him to do a custom tune over the internet on mine and then go for a dyno.

Awesome bro...let us know what Aaron can do with a custonm tune. Then looking forward to seeing some dyno numbers!!

These guys can do custom maps:
http://www.unichipmaps.com/

Dyno numbers were I think ~+15 hp ~+15 torque on a FX45 when I talked to Aaron last. The real thing Unichip focuses on is hp/torque gains across the useable RPMs, so HP/Torque gain won't be as high as others, but the day-to-day driving difference should be noticeable.

Dyno tune is nice, but not necessary at this point for the $$ involved. Probably why Andy hasn't done it yet. His ECU and mods are all working in sync better, and a dyno tune will marginally improve that, probably not worth the $300 or whatever for an AWD pull.

Oh Andy, since you like toys -- you should get this:

While "dyno tune" is not necessary, but just get it on a dyno (if I recall is about $125) to get some evidence on gain will be nice. I will get it on a dyno for some concrete numbers once I get Aaron to tweak it via internet to have a custom map made.

Yeah, I have seen this new flux toy they have. It pretty pricey last I checked

Ok so what was the verdict ..... Unichip or Uprev? Which provided the most reliable gains? I know that some consider the Unichip more flexible due to the piggyback nature and non-ecu imprinting allowing transfer to another vehicle.

If transferring to another vehicle is not important - Which would you choose and why?

Also, was anyone able to confirm the Uprev shift points? Does it help? If you did the Uprev tune would the Transgo Mod still be needed?

The Unichip install seems straightforward enough and there is a great step by step install that I read through on the forum. I also read that others were in communication with Unichip regarding the mapping and improving the shift points was this resolved as well?

Looking to throw some cash at one of the mods in the next couple of weeks .......

I am leaning toward the Uprev as I have a Pro-Tuner Shop about 50 miles from me that also offers discounted labor on Mod parts provided by and installed by them with Lifetime Perpetual Tune and dyno at no additional charge.

To close out my question:

1. Should you do Transgo Mod or do the tune's help shift points enough? If they don't help enough then it stands to reason that Transgo should be done prior to the tune so the tune can incorporate the Mod; correct?
2. Uprev or Unichip Tune?

I attempted to read through all the threads I could find but never really got the feel of one or the other .... I also noticed some major modders have one and others have the other ..... I would like input from those that have actually done the mod and have real world experience that goes farther than opinion on what you have read.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide a little clarification ...........

I have had both, and I don't think one is definitively better than the other. That said, I'll address your questions as I've renumbered them above.

1) There is no verdict. Your goals will determine which will suit you better.

2) Not sure what this means. Both provide gains and neither reduces reliability. One difference is that you CAN blow your engine pretty easy if you fuck up an Uprev tune, which is not the case with Unichip.

3) Depends on what you want out of the car. If simple bolt-on mods are your upper limit, I'd suggest the unichip. If your plan on FI or even cams, then I'd suggest Uprev as it is more capable in areas that are helpful with that level of mods.

4 and 4b) I'm not following. Uprev shift points? You mean line pressure? Afaik thats the only trans variable that you can alter in Uprev...

5) Yes. The Transgo kit is mechanical. It replaces valves and springs, as well as instructions to permanently alter the valve body. One of the effects is increased line pressure (like the Uprev variable) but there are others.

6) Unichip has zero control over shift points, or anything related to the transmission.

7) "Enough" is subjective. I have it, and would recommend it over either Unichip or Uprev. Like I said above, the kit is somewhat similar to the Uprev trans mod, but goes far beyond. Whereas you may notice the line pressure increase from Uprev, the Transgo kit will make your tires chirp into second gear.

8) There is no reason to do one before the other. They are different enough to be completely independent. If I had to dig for a reason to do the Transgo first, Imight say that it would be advantageous to reduce the trans slip before increasing the power. In reality it totally doesn't matter which you do first.

9) Both! Or neither!! Or just one depending on your situation!!!

Hey Tchuck thanks for the very detailed response .... this is what I was looking for ..... wasn't sure if there was anything that made one better over the other ..... you have helped me with my decision Thanks
