Water pump replacement after 100k????

around 120k miles.

Thanks man. I was wondering how the Fx45 water pump looks over 100k miles. It seems like the FX water pump is good for about 200K maybe. It is less complicated to repair than the smaller timing chain driven model used on the 35. Sometimes simpler is better, but I will keep an eye on it due to it having a clutch, and change it about 150K if it gives me no problems before then.

I did find a few things when changing out some of these parts for the FX45.

There are 2 "thermostats" one on the front of the engine, and one on the back ("water control valve"). I replaced the front one.

I used a stant thermostat, the oem nissan thermostat has a "jiggle valve". never seen this before. did some research and drilled a hole in the stant.

The fan had a bunch of cracks in it, pretty creepy looking. So i got a new fan.

Lost a bit of matic-s when removing the radiator, so have to add what i lost.

The lower radiator hose has a rubber sleeve on it. transferred it to the new hose.

Apparently my torque wrench sucks, so sheared one water pump bolt. I'm gonna stop using it and do more hand tightening.

Never think that the "parts specialist" at the dealership knows what he's doing. Dude ordered me a FX35 bolt, instead of a FX45. The smarter parts guy showed me the diagram to confirm parts.

Generally, you will hear noise from the water pump. As for timing belt, the FX runs timing chain, technically it doesn't need to be changed.

^ u also can see seepage on the little window that the water pump hides behind. Normally when that cover is wet ur pump is leaking.

There isnt a set time frame for water pumps. And chains normally last a good amount of time before they stretch, tensioners and guides are more likely to break before the chain on the vq motors.

My 2 cents ;)

I have a 2003 FX35 and when my water pump went out (around 120,000 miles) I didn't hear any noises at all but there was coolant leaking out the side of the block. Apparently there is a little channel on the bottom of the pump that if it fails the coolant follows the channel out the side of the block.

My FX is currently at 125k miles, I read the water pump is internal and the I see kits online with timing chains. So how much should it cost to replace water pump labor wise?

Is it best to replace the water pump and thermostat while changing the coolant? Just wondering if stuff would spill out, but can be avoided if it's already drained.

I changed the thermostat just bc its a fairly cheap oem part and for peace of mind. I also ordered a oem water pump but my current one wasnt leaking and seemed to be working fine when I changed my coolant so I left that alone but have it just in case it goes bad down later on.

yea it's easier to do it all at once, but your probably a ways away from switching your water pump and thermostat out. right?

96k miles now, doing a coolant flush/replacement soon as Nissan gets my o-rings in. Figured I'd do it all while I'm in there and have a couple less things to worry about in the future. Although I guess I have to wait again since I ordered the other parts tonight from InfinitiPartsUSA. I can do the AT fluid in the meantime I guess.

I'm hoping that after I get these done I won't really have anything to do for awhile besides oil changes.

Thermostat is easy, since it's basically just removing a couple hoses and some bolts then putting on the new part. I noticed the hoses that corroded the metal it seemed like, and this was happening on most places where coolant and hoses interacted with metal attachments. Probably another good reason to change out the hoses every now and then.

As for the water pump, I couldn't seem to get my timing chain loose enough to get it out. I also saw in a video DIY that if you mess up the manual cranking of the pulley to loosen/tighten the chain then you can really have a problem so maybe I just didn't push far enough to loosen it. I was just going by when the other side got tight. I didn't have a direct line of sight to the water pump so maybe it's really not this hard but I just can't see something important. My worry now is that it got messed up somehow from trying to wiggle it loose, especially the seals, so I need to find a way to get it out.

i changed mine around 100k. see my post above. it's a pretty straight forward install. Although I did alot of parts at once. I replaced my radiator, water pump, fan blade, hoses, thermostat(get an oem). Also I broke most of the hose clips trying to get the old hoses off. get a nice clip wrench if you can. I ended up getting the worm gear clips with the washers to replace the busted oem clips.

What sound will it give when the water pump is going? I've got a really slight noise from the front. I got a hose to pinpoint the noise, and it's coming from that area for sure. Kinda a metallic sound, but not loud at all.... Any suggestions?
