Engine Knocking

We just purchased our FX45 2003 from my in-laws two months ago. It only has 20k miles on it. When my wife got in it today she called to say it has a loud knock. I had someone come over who has a lot more car knowledge then me. He said the following:

Thinks maybe spun a rode bearing or bearing cap came loose. Also possibility something happened with the torque converter or flywheel.

I'm suprised by this due to the low milage. I will most likely have vehicle towed to dealship for assesment. Has anyone seen this before on a low milage engine? Any chance it could be under warranty?

Update...Dealer advised I need the fuel injectors cleaned due to carbon build up. I've been using 93 octane fuel but the dealer said I need to get it from Shell or BP. We were using Marathon gas.

I had the same problem in another car, go to the auto store and pickup two bottles of fuel octane booster and fuel injector cleaner. Not saying this is the problem but I spent 9.00 I would rather start off simple than having the dealer give a invoice for 1k.

I have been using injector cleaner for the last 4 years and I've yet to have any problems with spark plugs

Aren't all Fuel injector cleaner basically octane boosters? The way they clean the system is by having higher octane to burn off all the composites, etc. Kind of like if you take Tylenol or aleve or motrin....they are all for headaches or whatever, some may have more caffeine then others, etc.

so when I heard don't use octane boosters, I also think don't use fuel injector cleaners....

I'm curious to see what everyone's thoughts on this are....

^ Me too

Owners manual says not to use them other wise it will cause damage to the emission control system thus voiding the factory warranty on it. Can anyone clarify this?

the higher octane will improve throttle response but in the mean time, it will slowly wear out your pistons therefore in time that stuff will erode your engine very bad
instead of buying octane booster you could just try one liter of acetone in a 1 full tank of gasoline and see the difference it makes it's about the same thing.Octane is NOT a power maker Octane is knock preventer. Higher octane is HARDER to burnRunning too much octane will cause a loss in power. Correct me if I'm wrong

^ +1 Finally ! Someone who has a fair grasp of what octane ratings are.
Higher octane gasoline with no ethanol or ''booster'' additives is meant to burn more slowly and completely for high compression engines . Find the equivilant octane gas that the manufacturer recommends in your area , use a clean fuel filter , and DRIVE your car normally. Gas loses its combustible properties relatively quickly no matter what it's octane rating was out of the pump , so don't let it sit for months and expect regular performance ! :nerd (2): P.S. I'm just talking gas here, not sayimg adding anything will help unless you don't mind chancing damaging related sensors etc.

Man, an 2003 FX45 with 20K miles on it.. lucky!

I use a bottle of injector cleaner at every oil change interval.

Some more info on gas---

The United States Environmental Protection Agency -(EPA) introduced the minimum gasoline detergent standard 1 in 1995 and soon after most gasoline marketers who had previously provided higher levels of detergents reduced the concentration level of detergents in commercial gasoline to meet the new standard. Whether the higher detergent levels were necessary remains disputed. The levels required are necessary to meet emissions standards but not engine longevity standards.
In 2004 BMW -joined the consortium in 2007.
Gas brands can participate and get Top Tier listing if they meet certain standards.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Retailers
Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.
In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards.
Additional gasoline retailers are added to the TOP TIER list as they meet the standards. The retailers known to be on the TOP TIER list are shown below.

^ In my area, speedway is cheap and meets the minimum requirements for premium for the FX50, but is not on the list. After awhile those cost savings add up A LOT, but I don't see the HUGE difference between premium this or that gas station if it at least meets the FX requirements. for example, speedway premium is 92 and sheel/amaco/mobil is 93, but FX requirements minimum 91 i think octane.

called infiniti and they told me to buy there fuel injection cleaner and run the vehicle rpms up because of carbon build up not octane boost if you run the vehicle hard here and there you will be fine stop treating it like a baby drive it like you stole it and run those horses lol good luck

They told me the same thing about my wifes mini so is it just their fuel injection cleaner or can it be like the chevron with techron fuel system cleaner I was surprised that QwikTrip was on that list and Valero wasn't
